Show 20 Vernal Express Wednesday, May 8, 1996 Tennis team drops two heading into regional Adult Softball leagues begin with tournament by Eric F. Pye Sports Writer The Uintah High School tennis team has finally settled on a rotation rota-tion sort of. Now, all the team needs is a little while to get settled in. But as the team's two most recent re-cent matches indicate, even with practice time, the end result might remain the same. In commenting on his team's 3-2 loss to Lehi last Thursday and 4-1 loss to "Park City Monday, head coach Kevin Dickson took a straight forward approach. "Park City is the best team in the region. Us and Lehi are pretty close to each other, but a level below Park City. For either one of us to take region would require a lot of help in the form of an upset from the other team." Uintah split with the Pioneers as each team won on their home court by the identical 3-2 score. "I think we are a little better than Lehi with the lineup we have. Their victory over our second doubles team was unexpected and I don't think it will happen again." Coach Dickson was referring to Brandon Henderson and Dustin Pye's 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 5-7 loss at that spot. Pye and Henderson defeated de-feated the same Lehi team a few days earlier in straight sets. The two are the defending state champions at that position but just recently started playing together again and went into the match a little flat. The first doubles team of Erik Wilcken and Dan Darlington took one of the team's two victories with an impressive 6-3, 6-3 win. Wes Madsen at third singles grabbed the other Uintah win with a 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 7-5 decision. Steve Collins lost a tough 6-3, 6-1 match at first singles while Aaron O'Dell dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision at number two singles. "We played fairly well, I'm not so sure all the matches wouldn't turn out the same way (except for second sec-ond doubles) if we played again," the coach said. Monday, the team traveled to Park City to take on the Miners and found themselves with a tiger by the tail. The Miners had spanked Uintah 5-0 in their first meeting and were looking for a re-run. Uintah was hoping their revamped lineup would be more competitive this time around and possibly pull the upset which almost happened. Despite the 4-1 loss, Coach Dickson felt the team scored at least a moral victory and set a competitive competi-tive tone for this Saturday's region championship back in Park City. "To look at the score, it would appear ap-pear they handled us easily again," Dickson said, "but the matches we lost this time were much closer and with a few bounces here and there, who knows?" Uintah's lone victory came at number two doubles where Henderson and Pye took a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory. Wilcken and Darlington dropped a marathon 6-3, 4-6, 6-7 (7-4) decision at number one doubles, dou-bles, but in the process left a little calling card for this Saturday. Steve Collins, playing against the two time defending state champion at number one John Birch went down 6-0, 6-0. At second singles, Aaron O'Dell put up a good fight before falling 6-2, 6-4 while third singles player Marty Mortenson went down 6-2, 6-1. The region championships will begin this Saturday in Park City at 9 a.m. with the finals tentatively scheduled for noon.
