Last Friday, the Utes took the field against an under manned Fruita Wildcat team which dressed only 24 players on varsity. Among those 24 however were running backs Drew Mayer and Brian Dcrc and quarterback Casy Doss. Uintah took the opening kickoff and failed to gain first down after three plays from scrimmage. The Utes then showed signs of days past briefly, as the attempted punt resulted result-ed in a low snap and blocked kick which gave the Wildcats the ball inside in-side the Utc 20 with first down. In high school golf the region re-gion teams will meet for a series of region matchups and then the Region 7 Tournament. The best four of six scores are totaled each week. Then the combination of all region meets, including the Region 7 tourney, are totaled to determine the state tournament qualifiers. Uintah has made the list and been King, Car. 40-36:76 Ute JV finish week 0-2 with loss to Union The Uintah High junior varsity football team suffered their second loss of the season last Thursday at the hands of Union 21-6 as the underclassmen un-derclassmen have their work cut out now to turn the season around. Uintah traveled to Altamont for a game with' the Longhorns two weeks ago and lost in a close one 14-7. The program which is designed de-signed to give juniors and sopho-; sopho-; mores game experience and skills development for future varsity competition com-petition plays several varsity programs pro-grams in 1A and 2A as well as a mirror schedule of the varsity team. Several members of the varsity play both ways on occasion. The team is headed by coach Craig Monsen with help from Mike Peterson. After the junior varsity game last Thursday, the freshmansophomore team lined up with Union for an abbreviated ab-breviated 2 quarter game. The Utes the final drive was impressive. Meyers proved he can pass the ball when necessary as he completed long passes to Brian Fletcher and Scott Mansfield. Both Fletcher and Mansfield made good catches and were open. Mike Dockcry, despite the blocked kick which he had to field and errant snap to even attempt at-tempt to get off, is kicking the ball 40 plus yards most of the time and thai is something Uintah has not done in years. The Utes go into the Union tournament tour-nament with a 15 stroke advantage and a course they are familiar with. Look for them to stay in first place after two weeks if Monsen, Pope, and Mott stay strong and they continue con-tinue to get help from Smuin, Cox, Mortensen, Aycock, or Scott Monsen. Monsen, Pope, Perry: 78 789-3511 avenged the jv to some extent by handing the Union freshmen and sophomores an 8-0 loss when running run-ning back Beau Perry punched it in for the only score of the contest. The Union game was the first of the season for the freshsoph team lead by coach Bill Maresh with help from coaches Ken Yama and Tim McFadden. The junior varsity will travel to Craig, Colorado, on Thursday for a matchup with the Moffat County Bulldog jv as a prelude to the Friday varsity matchup between the two at Uintah. The freshsoph team will line up against the sophomores and freshmen from our Colorado neighbors also on Thursday, but in Vernal. The freshmen and sophomores arc joined under a new school district policy which brings all athletics grades 9 through 12 under the direction direc-tion and preview of the high school program. That provides three interchangeable inter-changeable levels of competition in each sport potentially which allow for development of skills and competitive com-petitive level as a student makes his way through high school. going into the region wars. The Utes now will host Moffat County (Craig, Colorado) in their first home game of the year at the Ute Football Stadium this Friday, beginning at 7:30.
