Show Sport Shorts BYU ranked in AP poll 16th Brigham Young University remained re-mained in the top 20 rankings by the Associated press this week following fol-lowing a 30-10 win over the University of Texas at El Paso, Miners in their season and WAC opener last Saturday. The Coug's are currently also ranked 14 th by the Coaches in the United Press International polls. Both BYU and Utah were successful suc-cessful in their openers, and Utah got off to a great start Saturday, handing new Head Coach Ron McBride a win over instate rival Utah State. The cards were stacked against the three NCAA IA schools remaining perfect in the opener with the instate matchup. The Aggies must now look to George Allen's, Long Beach State, in a Big West Conference game for their first win. Utah travels to Minnesota for their second game of pre-season in an attempt to stay unbeaten. un-beaten. Weber State will travel to Boise State for a Big Sky game in the second week of action. Meanwhile, BYU will attempt to maintain their lofty status in the college col-lege pig skin ranks when they host the defending national champion, and currently number one ranked, University of Miami, Hurricanes for their season home opener. The Coug's are in a win-win situation in this one which stands to be a season maker if they pull off an upset in the ' friendly confines of Cougar Stadium. The only way this one ends( up being a season breaker is if the "Y" folds up its tents and gets blown out They aren't expected to win so a respectable outing changes nothing, but a close one or a win could catapult them to the top in a hurry. The Coug's are led by Heisman Trophy candidate Ty Ditmer and have an explosive offense, with what proved last week to be a decent de-cent defense. BYU won the mythical mythi-cal national championship in 1984 when current quarterback coach Robbie Bosco was at quarterback. The top four in the AP poll are: 1. Miami (27 1st place votes), 2. Notre Dame (20), 3. (tie) Florida State and Auburn. Year of the no-hitter Year of the No-Hitter! 1990 appears to be the Year of the No-hitter, as Dave Steib became the ninth major league pitcher of the year to allow no hits in a complete game, in a 3-0 Toronto Blue Jay win over the Cleveland Indians. It was his first, after four near misses, and a record setting effort which makes nine for major league baseball on the year. Steib came close on four other occasions during his career taking all four into the ninth inning (then into the final out) before being turned away. Luck? Certainly luck plays a role in all sports, and that may very well be the best explanation for the record setting year for the pitchers. Luck of the draw...bounce of the ball...etc. Few theories on what is going on have been received as credible by baseball experts. A slightly smaller ball has been blamed, a dead center ball, the spring training lockout, and other theories have been met with skepticism. skepti-cism. In the past we've had the "year of the bean ball," the "year of the corked bat," the "year of the home run," and the "year of the balk." Why not the year of the no-hitter and let it go at that?
