The Utes have also defeated Orem and Provo. The Utes have an overall mark of 6-2. Timpview won the first four matches mat-ches and grabbed a 12-0 advantage over the Uintah Utes. The Thunder-birds Thunder-birds won the 98 pound match when Mike Sorensen downed Uintah's Kyle Smuin by the score of 12-5. Sorensen jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first round on a takedown and three-point near fall. Smuin scored a reversal in the second round, but Sorensen added add-ed a neutral and takedown for a 8-2 lead. Smuin scored a reversal and neutral, but two reversals in the third rbund gave Sorensen a 12-5 win. Holmes overcame Horrocks' Hor-rocks' lead with a reversal, three point near fall and another point to rally for a four point triumph. The 119 pound match was a barn burner and Peter Larsen nipped Uintah's Uin-tah's Ryan Siddoway, 10-8, to give Timpview a 12-0 lead. Siddoway jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a takedown in the first round, but a reversal and two-point near fall put Larsen ahead at 4-2. Siddoway scored a neutral in the second round, but Larsen added a neutral and takedown, which increased his lead to four points at 7-3. Siddoway outscored Larsen, 5-3, in the third round on a neutral and two takedowns, but Larsen scored two neutrals and a penalty point to beat Siddoway by two points. Uintah finally gained their first win in the meet when 126 pounder Joe Newell bombed James Larsen, 17 to 5, which cut Timpview's lead to seven points at 12-5. Two takedowns and a neutral gave Newell a first round lead of 5-2 over Larsen. Timpview's Larsen scored a reversal in the first round. Larsen scored a neutral in the second round, but Newell added a reversal and takedown for a 9-3 lead. Newell erupted for eight points in the third quarter on two takedowns and two near falls to thump Larsen, 17-5. Larsen scored two neutrals in the third round. A major decision win at 132 pounds and a pin at 138 pounds put the Utes into the lead at 15-12. Funk grabbed a 4-0 lead in the first round on a takedown and two-point near fall. Cook added a reversal and neutral in the third round. The Utes' Gary Murray Mur-ray won the 155 pound match on a forfeit. Scott Glines of Timpview downed Rick Porter, 16-2, in the 167 pound match. Mike Slaugh, 185 and Matt Sunkees, heavyweight, won their matches on forfeits. The Uintah Ute wrestling team will host American Fork, Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and will battle bat-tle Mountain View in Vernal, January 31. Uintah will take on Pleasant Plea-sant Grove on the road, February 1. Uintah High School captured second se-cond place in the Panther Invitational Invita-tional at Pineview High School in St. George, Saturday with 156 points. Delta, Utah, placed first at 184 1-2 counters. Eldorado of Las Vegas captured cap-tured third place at 153 counters and Chaparrel of Las Vegas finished in fourth place at 102 counters. Basic High School of Boulder City, Nevada, garnered fifth place at 89 points. Ute 145 pounder George Cook captured cap-tured first place. He decisioned an Eldorado tussler, 5-2, in the championship cham-pionship match. The championship win was the first 1st place title for Cook since he started wrestling on the varsity team and Ed Johnson, Ute wrestling coach, said, "Cook is looking real good." Gary Murray, 155, garnered first place for the Uintah Utes when he downed a Chaparrel matman, 22-2, in the championship match. Murray had only two points scored against him in the tournament. "I felt Murray should have been voted the most outstanding wrestler, but they gave it to some other wrestler," said Johnson. "Murray had an outstanding tournament." Ryan Siddoway placed second at 119 pounds when he lost in overtime on criteria. The first round will begin at 10:30 a.m. and the second round will start at 1:30 p.m. The consolation con-solation semi-finals will start at 3:30 p.m. and the consolation finals will start at 6 p.m. The championship matches will begin at 7 p.m. 3-A wrestlers will compete in the state meet at Murray High School, February 15-16. The first round will begin Friday at 12 noon and second round will start at 5 p.m. Wrestling action will begin, February 16 at 12 noon. Consolation final matches will start at 6 p.m. and the championship matches will follow shortly after. Panthers win tournament title The Vernal Junior High 9th grade Panthers improved their record to 12 wins and 1 loss with an one-point win over Mountain View, Friday in Vernal Ver-nal and two triumphs at the Vernal Freshman Tournament, Saturday. Mountain View jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the first quarter and led by four points, 23-19 at halftime. Jolley and St. John led the Bruins in the first quarter with four points and Beutler added two points. Derrik Tollifison did all the scoring for the Panthers in the first quarter with five points on one field goal and three free throws. The Panthers awoke from their scoring sleep in the second quarter with 14 points. Tollifson, Scott Laing and Rhadd Wilier led the Utes in the second quarter with four points. Mountain View scored 13 points in the second quarter. Madsen led the Bruins with four points. Hancock and Beutler added three points. St. John scored two points and Jolley added one point.
