Street flights get face lift By Trad Mnk Expr.il Auitfwtf Editor A golden glow has begun to descend des-cend over Vernal City at nightfall, with the installation of high pressure sodium vapor street lights by Utah Power and Light (UP&L) crews. ."Vernal City was able to put its . progressive foot forward by electing to upgrade its city street lighting," said Robert Thompson, manager of the Vernal UPiL office. Vernal is the first city in UP&L's southern division to convert its street lighting from the existing mercury vapor type to the high pressure sodium vapor. The new system Is more cost effective than the old system and produces greater levels of illumination, while requiring less electrical energy to due so. In comparing the two systems the mercury vapor provides about two and a half times as many light lumens as a conventional incandescent incandes-cent lamp, whereas the high pressure sodium provides two and a half limes as many light lumens as docs mercury mer-cury vapor. The new system provides about V lumens per watt compared to 40 lumens per wait on the old system, I'P&L crews began converting the street light to the new sy&tem in Oc-toler Oc-toler and completed the project Jan, 17, Street lights In the ci!y limits now have a goldm hue Instead of white. Birding association to hold first meeting The conversion to the new system required the changing of wiring, mast arms, lighting fixtures and lamps, bringing the total to over 266 units. UP&L crews spent over 1200 manhours making the conversion. Several miles of old pilot wire was removed along with multiple switch installations. Each of the new lights functions independently of the others and each has their own photo-cell control. UP&L, who convinced city officials to make the conversion, bore the cost of new system, which is in the neighborhood of $80,000. "I feel the management of Vernal City, Including Mayor Sam Snyder and the council representatives, are to be congratulated for their foresight In providing Vernal City residents with the very best for the least possible cost," said Thompson. Both City Manager Ken Bassctt and Mayor Sam Snyder said they were well pleased with the new system. Bassctt said that taxpayers will receive the greatest benefit from the system because Intersections will be better lighted at no additional or hidden costs. Mayor Snyder said he thinks the new system U "really wonderful," and that IT&L crew members should be commended for their work. The new stmt lights are most noticeable on the side and back streets. It's reliable with the supply unaffected by wind, weather, lightning or extreme cold. And gas burns efficiently so it burns cleanly. And the new generation of natural gas appliances leads the way in efficiency, too. Today's new, high efficiency gas dryers, for example, have pilotless Ignition, improved automatic control devices and sensors. And gas dries clothes faster. Makes them feci softer and fluffier. For only pennies a load far less than non gas models. As a result, gas continues to 1 vf llir itinvf fwmnmlml most affordable fuel for home use even at today's prices.
