NEWS , r ; , & NOTES The US Cycling Team-Champs in '84? fflr "tf rP Many Americans are supporting the US Cycling Team's efforts to become world champions at the 1984 Olympic Games. The challenge of making the US Cycling team the best in the world is being met, thanks to superb riders and technology that's putting put-ting those riders on the swiftest, most aerodynamic bicycles ever made. The riders we'll be sending to the 1984 Olympics, sports experts say, have never nev-er been in better condition, physically or mentally, thanks to highly sophisticated sophisti-cated and effective training programs. What's more, the bikes they'll be riding on are s t a te-of-t he-art finally matching and surpassing the high standards of bicycles used by European and Soviet So-viet athletes. At the United States Cycling Team Technical Development De-velopment Center in Dayton, Day-ton, Ohio, built by Huffy Corporation and Raleigh Cycles, space age materials materi-als and equipment for building build-ing and testing the latest lat-est design concepts in competition com-petition bicycling have created cre-ated world-class, winning bikes. Wheel hubs and rims have been narrowed to eliminate wind resistance, Spokes have been redesigned rede-signed to cut down on drag. Helium is used in tires instead of regular air for greater speeds. Wind tunnel tests ex amine everything from individual indi-vidual cycle components to composites of cycles and riders. Victory in track and road racing events at the upcoming upcom-ing Olympics won't come cheap, however. The U.S. team, and the United States Cycling Federation's Elite Athlete and new rider development devel-opment programs need fi-nancial fi-nancial support. Many Americans are becoming Charter Patrons of the U.S. Cycling team by donating from $5 to $1,000. The money contributed goes to provide the US Cycling Team with the finest in materials ma-terials and training. Part of it will help support the Elite Athlete Program, which identifies and trains promising promis-ing young US riders. In addition ad-dition to improving our bid for Olympic medals, Charter Patrons help the US Cycling Team represent America in such events as the Pan American Games, World Championships and major international competitions. Tax deductible contributions contribu-tions may be sent to the U.S. Cycling TeamHuffy Corporation Patron Program, Pro-gram, Box 1204, Dayton, Ohio 45401. You can help the US Cycling team break new ground in racing. Manning, Marv Holdaway, Preston Miller, Mark Deets. Missing when the picture was taken was Mike Clausen.
