Hv , - r r cv; Marijuana Marijuana or Cannabas sativa is a plant that has been widely grown in tropical and temperate regions for use as fiber in the manufacture of hemp rope. More recently, in America, it has become a household term because of its use as a psychoactive drug. Its use as a drug is illegal in the United States. The primary psychoactive substance in marijuana is delta-9-tetrahydro-cannabinal (TOO. THC produces initial restlessness and an increaseed sense of well-being, followed by a dreamy, carefree state of relaxation; alteration of sensory perception, including an illusory expansion ex-pansion of time and space; a more vivid sense of touch, sight, smell, taste and sound; hunger, especially a craving crav-ing for sweets; together with subtle changes in thought formation and expression. ex-pression. Heavier doses intensify these reactions plus a flight of fragmentary thoughts with disturbed associations. This extent of exposure also results in a dulling of attention and impaired memory accompanied by an altered sense of self-identity. High doses can result in distortions of body image, loss of personal identity, fantasies, and hallucinations. Excessively high doses precipitate toxic psychosis. There are those who would argue otherwise, but there are many reports which show the dependence-producing properties of cannabis. Other reports document substantial evidence that "pot" has injurious effects on reproduction, lungs, cellular metabolism and the brain. (See the December issue of Reader's Digest 1979 and the article titled Marijuana Alert.) The article indicates that these damages are physiological meaning that "grass" smoking or ingestion can result in actual physical dcniage to the user's body, not to mention the possibility of genetic damage to yet unborn un-born children. Hashish and hashish oil are concentrates concen-trates or extracts of Cannabis which obviously contain more concentrated amounts of THC. Having the same properties they produce the same effects ef-fects depending upon the volume and extent of usage. I would never suggest that one side effect is of greater consequence than another, but most users will suffer psychological and mental effects which will be more damaging than the physical ones in many cases. Extended Extend-ed usage of marijuana will diminish alertness and ability to be attentive. This results in poor scholastic performance. perfor-mance. Obviously, poor performance in school will result in problems whose impact will depend on the variance between what the user does and would have accomplished had he not been so affected. Another serious side effect is the deterioration of coping skills. Since marijuana usage can result in a continued con-tinued additional expense, poorer grades, possible trouble with the law, etc. there are consequently additional problems to cope with. Because "pot" provides a false sense of well-being, it follows that it is likely to be used as a means of coping with life's pressures and problems. To the degree that this pseudo-coping method is used the person per-son loses out on that much coping experience. ex-perience. The intendent loss of coping skills can plague even a former marijuana mari-juana user for the rest of his life. Marijuana could be considered the "first taboo" when it comes to drugs. Considered by many to be harmless or at least of little consequence it is easy to rationalize its use. It is just as illegal, il-legal, however, as other more dangerous drugs. Having broken that first barrier makes further infractions and experimentation much easier. The likelihood of digressing into more serious drug usage is much greater for a marijuana user than it is for a non-user. non-user. Marijuana is very accessible right here in our community. Every effort should be made by all of us to curtail its usage and thus its potential harm. Please contact the SAFE Committee and get involved. Smith's adds new bulk food line Smith's Food King of Vernal is the 13th store in the company's chain to add a bulk food department for the convenience of their customers. The company operates stores in Utah, Idaho and Wyoming and hopes to have a bulk food line in 80 percent of their stores by the end of the year. The first store to use the new line in the Smith's chain was in Bountiful. The bulk food line in Vernal made its debut Friday at about 1 p.m. and so far seems to be very well received by the store's customers. Customers can save 10 to 60 percent by buying items at bulk prices. The Vernal store currently carries a line of 350 different items and plans to con tinue adding items as the need arises. All the products in the line are national brands and not second grade items. "In addition to the savings aspect of the program, the customer can portion the products they buy and it's also fun," said Store Manager Jeff Abate. Some of the products available are assortments of candy, cookie mixes, noodles of almost every kind and shape,, cake mixes, flour, nuts and vegetables, even spices. Most of the products have a free recipe card to aid customers in mixing mix-ing the right portions when using the product. Many of the needed ingredients ingre-dients are contained in the mixes and customers generally only add water to complete the recipe. Scoops are available-at each of the barrels to allow customers to draw out the correct portions of the products. The products are placed in plastic bags and tagged with a number corresponding cor-responding to the product's barrel. The cashiers type in the product number and the price is calculated at the register. During the first weekend of operations opera-tions the store ran out of several items, but are in the process of replenishing them. To insure that items stay fresh the store only orders enough of any item to last until the next ordering period. Orders are usually made on a weekly basis. i. r ..- I , I k -TV. vi . - v 5JtV J?-.-, wiscr: 14 VERNAL CITY sewer treatment facility came to valley and allow the city plant to shut down after a standstill last week as EPA officials approve 29 years of service, three lagoon site in a new facility for the entire Sewer f irecotfmenv plant closes after 29 years The 29-year-old Vernal City sewer treatment facility, 1880 East Main, officially of-ficially shut down Thursday as EPA officials stamped approval on three sewer lagoons. The city treatment facility has been kept on line during the testing period of the sewer lagoons, east of Vernal ' near the Buckskin Hills. While both the lagoons and the city treatment facility were operating, Vernal City paid double for sewage treatment. Cost of operating the city treatment facility was $4,000 a month. But the cost of operating the faculty facul-ty was only a minor problem. Because of the age of the facility, replacement parts are no longer available and the facility has just barely hung on for the past two years, said Kay Overson, Vernal City public works director. The facility is also too small for the amount of sewage in the city. The treatment facility will remain operational until the final okay is given to the two remaining sewer lagoons. Although Dellis Morrill, who has managed the facility for 29 years, said he will miss it, "he was tickled to see it closed," Overson said.
