However, McNamara missed both shots and the game with Uintah Engineering, the regular season A League champs, went into overtime, but McNamara's teammates cheered him up with an 80 to 71 triumph in double dou-ble overtime for first place, Friday in Vernal. The Uintah Engineering team garnered an 8-0 lead on two field goals by Rex Hampton and two-pointers by Mark Deets and Brad Manning. Field goals by Calvin Caldwell sliced the Uintah Engineering lead to four points at 8-4, but Hampton put in a two-pointer two-pointer for a 10-4 lead. Hampton poured in two field goals for an 18-10 Uintah Engineering advantage and field goals by Monsen and Gilroy cut the Uintah Enginering led to six points at 20-14. Hampton popped pop-ped in two, but a three-point play by Monsen made the score at the end of the first quarter, Uintah Engineering, 22 and Altex Oil, 17. Hampton was the top scorer in the first quarter for Uintah Engineering at 14 points on seven field goals. Manning Mann-ing added four points. Marv Holdaway, Deets and Tim Ferrell added add-ed two points. Monsen led Altex Oil with nine points on four field goals and one free throw. Caldwell scored four points and Gilroy poured in three counters. Tad Coon added one point. Uintah Engineering scored the first six points in the second quarter on field goals by Manning and Hampton and two free throws by Holdaway for a 28-17 lead. McNamara popped in two free throws, but Holdaway poured in four points for a 32-21 Uintah Engineering lead. Coon struck for four straight points and McNamara flipped in a free throw to bring Altex Oil within six points of the Uintah Engineering lead at 32-26. However, Uintah Engineering outscored Altex Oil, 7 to 2 in the rest of the quarter for a 39-28 lead on four points at the foul line by Holdaway and two points by Rod Aycock plus one counter by Deets. Holdaway led Uintah Engineering in the second quarter with eight points on six free throws and one field goal. Manning, Hampton and Aycock added add-ed two points. Deets scored one point. McNamara led Altex Oil with five points on three free throws and one basketball during the championship game in the A League Tournament Tour-nament between Uintah Engineering and Altex Oil. Altex Oil outscored Uintah Enginerring in the rest of the third quarter, 5-0 on field goals by Gilroy and Wayne Caldwell plus a free throw by Calvin Caldwell to cut the Uintah Engineering lead to five points at 48-43 at the end of the third quarter. Gilroy burned the hoop in the third quarter with eight points on four field goals. Monsen, Coon and Wayne Caldwell added two points. Calvin Caldwell scored one point. Hampton led Uintah Engineering with three points. Holdaway, Carter and Manning Mann-ing added two counters each. A three-point play by Gilroy and a field goal by Wayne Caldwell put Altex Oil back into the ballgame due to a 48-48 tie with nine minutes to go. Hampton put in a field goal for a 50-48 Uintah Engineering lead, but Bobby Caldwell flipped in a shot to knot the game up at 50-50. A Van Hadlock field goal gave Altex Oil its first lead in the game at 52-50. A free throw by Carter cut the Altex Oil lead to one point at 52-51 and Preston Miller fired in a field goal for a 53-52 Uintah Engineering lead. A field goal by Gilroy returned a lead of 54-53 to Altex Oil, but Hampton Hamp-ton struck for two to gain a 55-54 Uintah Uin-tah Engineering advantage. Another field goal by Hampton increased the Uintah Engineering advantage to three points at 57-54. Caldwell drove to the hoop and scored and Gilroy had a shot bounce just right through the hoop for a 58-57 Altex Oil lead with 3: 17 left. Miller converted con-verted one out of two free throws to tie up the game at 58-58. Holdaway blocked block-ed an Altex Oil shot and Uintah Engineering nabbed the loose ball, but committed a turnover on their end of the court. Calvin Caldwell pumped in a shot for a 60-58 Altex Oil lead. Uintah Uin-tah Engineering tied up the game on a field goal by Hampton, but free throws by Gilroy put Altex Oil at 62-60 with 1 : 03 to go. Manning fired in a shot with 30 seconds left to tie up the contest con-test at 62-62. Altex Oil called two timeouts and worked for the final shot of the game. McNamara was fouled at the buzzer, but missed both free throws and the game went into overtime. Gilroy led Altex Oil in the fourth quarter with nine points on three field goals and three free throws. Bobby Caldwell added four points. Calvin Caldwell, Wayne Caldwell and Hadlock added two points. Hampton led Uintah Engineering in the fourth quarter with eight points on four field goals. Miller added three points and Manning scored two counters. Carter added one point. However, Altex Oil came right back and cut the Uintah Engineering lead to one point at 65-64 on a field goal by Gilroy. Deets flipped in a free throw for a 66-64 lead, but Gilroy sliced the Uintah Engineering lead to one point at 66-65. Wayne Caldwell coverted one out of two free throws to tie up the game at 66-66 with 14 seconds left. Uintah Uin-tah Engineering turned the ball over in the final seconds of the overtime and forced the game into a second overtime over-time because of a 66-66 tie. Coon scored a field goal to give Altex Oil a 68 to 66 lead, but a field goal by Deets tied up the game at 68-68. A Gilroy field goal gave a lead of 70-68 to Altex Oil and two points each by Calvin Caldwell and Monsen put Altex Oil up by six points at 74-68. Gilroy fired in two free throws for a 76-68 lead. Manning stopped the 8-0 streak by Altex oil on a free throw, but four free throws by Monsen gave Altex Oil an 11 point lead of 80-69. Holdaway scored the final points on a mighty slam and Altex Oil won the first place title by the score of 80-71. Gilroy led Altex Oil in the fourth quarter with seven points on two field goals and three free throws. Monsen flipped in six free throws for six points. Coon and Calvin Caldwell added two points. Wayne Caldwell scored one counter. Deets led Uintah Engineering with three points. Carter and Holdaway added two points. Carter scored one point. Gilroy was the top Altex Oil point producer at 27 points. He fired in ten field goals and popped in seven field goals. Monsen added 17 points. Also scoring for Altex Oil were: Calvin Caldwell, 9; Coon, 9; Wayne Caldwell, 5; McNamara, 5; Hadlock, 4 and Bobby Bob-by Caldwell, 4. Hampton led the Uintah Engineering Engineer-ing team with 27 points. He fired in 13 field goals and hit one free throw. Holdaway added 14 points and Manning Mann-ing scored 11 counters. Also putting in counters were: Deets, 6; Carter, 5; Miller, 3; Ferrell, 2 and Aycock, 2. Uintah Engineering beat Dinah Wasatch in the first round and Rocky Mountain Pump in a second round game, Rocky Mountain Pump downed Over The Hill. Altex Oil beat Triangle and defeated the Outsiders.
