McNeill downed down-ed Ricks, 8-2. Region victory number one was placed securely in the Uintah Ute vie-; tory column when they skinned the; Orem Tigers in Vernal, Thursday by the score of 39 to 22. The Utes own a 1-0 region mark and are 3-1 overall with wins over Wasatch, Union and Orem. Orem snared a 6-0 lead in the varsity varsi-ty meet with the Uintah Utes when Kordan Baker pinned Uintah's 98 pounder Shelton Humpries with 33 seconds left in the first round. Baker gamea a 5-0 lead early in the tirst round when he dropped Humphries for a takedown and rolled him over for a three-point near fall. The Uintah Utes knocked the Tigers out of the top spot in the meet when they won the next five matches to take a 26 to 6 advantage in the mat meet. Ryan Siddoway, 105, won his match on a forfeit and the meet was tied up at 6-6. Uintah acquired its first lead in the meet with Orem at 12-6 on a pin by Nick Snyder at 112 pounds. Snyder decked Oily Russell for a takedown in the first round to grab a 2-0 lead and pinned Russell with 37 seconds to go in the round. Craig Funk matched fellow teammate team-mate Snyder's pin with a fall of his own in the 119 pound match to increase the Ute advantage to 12 points at 18-6. Funk pocketed a 5-0 lead in the first round on a takedown and three-point near fall and added a neutral and takedown in the second round. Funk pinned John Engle with 1 : 18 left in the second round. Newell didn't gain his pin, and was forced to settle for a 23 0 T received an A grade for trying as he scored seven near falls in his 23 to 0 victory. Newell poured out the points in the first round for a 7-0 advantage over Childs due to a takedown and two near falls. Newell rolled Childs over for a near fall and scored a three-point near fall at the buzzer for a 12-0 lead. Uintah's Uin-tah's Newell continued to add up the points in the third round as he placed Childs' shoulder blades close to the mat three times for near falls and netted net-ted a reversal for a 23 to 0 mat win. Smith downed Rick Dowell of Orem, 9-2, in the 132 pound match to give the Utes a 20 point advantage of 26 to 6. Smith garnered a takedown in the first round for a 2-0 lead. He added a reversal rever-sal and three-point near fall in the second se-cond round for a 7-0 lead. Smith gained gain-ed a two-point near fall and Dowell garnered his only points on a reversal in the third round to make the final score: Smith, 9 and Dowell, 2. Steve Woodhouse, brother of two-time two-time state champion from Uintah High School, Morgan Woodhouse, snapped Uintah's five match winning streak when he pinned Uintah's 138 pounder, George Cook with four seconds left in the second round. Woodhouse gained a 5-0 lead in the first round on a takedown and three-point three-point near fall. Woodhouse netted a neutral for a 6-0 lead early in the second se-cond round. Cook was going for a takedown, but Woodhouse countered Cook and dropped the Ute to the mat. Woodhouse pinned Cook in the second round to cut Uintah'a lead to 14 points at 26 to 12. The Uintah Utes shut the door tight on Orem victory hopes with triumphs at 145 pounds and 155 pounds for a 33 to 12 advantage. Kary McNeill, 145, put the Utes back on the winning side of the wrestling universe when he downed Trent Ricks, 8 to 2. Ricks jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first round on a takedown, but McNeill scored a reversal and a two-point near fall at the buzzer for a first round lead W3 M J 4 SV of 4-2. Both wrestlers failed to score any points in the second round, but McNeill netted a reversal and two-point two-point near fall in the final round f or a six point win. An 11-2 win by Murray, 155, over Mark DePalma locked up the mat win for the Uintah Utes over Orem. Murray Mur-ray knocked DePalma to the mat lor a takedown in the first round, but DePalma pocketed a neutral. Murray grabbed a 4-1 lead in the second round on a two-point near fall. Uintah's Murray Mur-ray poured on the wrestling juice in the third round with a reversal, takedown and three-point near fall for a 11-2 win and a 33 to 12 Uintah lead over Orem. Orem captured two mat wins in a row at 167 and 185 pounds to slice Uintah's Uin-tah's lead to 11 points at 33 to 22, Mark Willis, Orem, 167, downed Uintah's Chad Bedell, 12 to 2. Willis pocketed a 5-0 lead in the first round on a takedown and three-point near fall. Bedell garnered a reversal in the second se-cond round, but Willis scored seven points in the round on a reversal and two near falls for a ten point win of 12-2. Dave Cohen won the 185 pound match when he pinned Uintah's Rod Hilkey with 54 seconds to go in the first round. Cohen netted a 2-0 lead early in the first round on a takedown. The final match of the evening ended end-ed in a Uintah Ute victory as Matt Sunkees won the heavyweight match against Paul Anderson on a pin at the 2:36 mark. Sunkees survived a move out on the mat by Anderson and gained gain-ed a takedown for a 2-0 lead in the first round. Sunkees' pin made the final score: Uintah, 39 and Orem, 22. Uintah will return to the mat January 3 in Vernal with a meet against Timpview and will host Pro-vo, Pro-vo, Jan. 5. The Utes, 1983 3-A champs, will battle Brighton, 1983 4-A champ, Jan. 10 in Salt Lake City. Uintah will host Skyline, Jan. 13 and Craig, Jan. 14. 126 pound win.
