Nutty tomato soup squares When tomato soup cake was introduced in 1922, much to everybody's pleasure and amazement, some still exclaimed "Soup in a cake?" Through the years we found that tomato soup blended beautifully with zucchini, apples, ap-ples, and all kinds of ingredients for desserts and snacks and now oatmeal in moist, snack squares that are chock-full of peanuts, raisins and apricots. IV2 cups all purpose flour 2 tsp. ground cinnamon 1 tsp. baking powder Vz tsp. ground allspice 1 can (10 oz.) tomato soup 1 cup packed brown sugar Vb cup shortening 2 eggs 1 cup dark seedless raisins 1 cup uncooked quick-cooking oats cup coarsely chopped peanuts Vi cup chopped dried apricots Preheat oven to 350. Sometimes you must go through a process of "trial and error" er-ror" before finding a way to solve the problem. Of course, manufacturers and retailers should use materials that can be easily removed; however, if they do not, here are some suggestions. sugges-tions. If one procedure doesn't work, it may be necessary to try the next one. CAUTION: Avoid using strong abrasives or solutions that will soften, scratch, discolor, or harm the household item. Test the cleaning material to be sure that it will not harm the surface of the household item. STICKERS WITH PRESSURE-SENSITIVE PRESSURE-SENSITIVE ADHESIVE Stickers, labels, and tapes with pressure-sensitive adhesive (those that are peeled from a backing or roll, then pressed in place) can oftentimes be peeled off. The remaining adhesive can then be rubbed off with your fingers similar to the way you "thumb-roll" "thumb-roll" rubber cement into small balls. If the adhesive is old or has been exposed ex-posed to high temperatures andor humidity, the "thumb-roll" method does not always work. Try removing as much of the label or tape as possible possi-ble with your fingernail or the dull edge of a knife. The next procedure will depend on the surface of the household item. It is important to pretest some of the materials. Sometimes the adhesive can be removed with a solution of warm water, liquid dishwashing detergent, and vinegar or ammonia. Other suggestions sug-gestions include oil, fingernail polish remover, and acetone. Depending on the surface, it may be possible to apply a generous amount of a commercial prewash spot remover on the adhesive. Try to get the solution underneath the film to work on the adhesive. Cleaning fluid will remove some adhesives; however, cleaning fluid can also soften some kinds of plastics if left in contact with the plastic surface for a period. A procedure pro-cedure for using cleaning fluid is to saturate a folded white cloth or paper towel with the cleaning fluid and place over the label or the tape. In a few minutes, when the adhesive softens, rub the label or sticker with a cloth or ' towel. If necessary, use your fingernail finger-nail until all traces of the label and adhesive have been removed. STICKERS WITH WATER-SOLUBLE WATER-SOLUBLE GLUE Oftentimes the labels with water-soluble water-soluble glue the kind that must be damped before it will stick need only on-ly to be soaked in water until the label loosens and the glue dissolves. Saturate several layers of white paper towel with warm water and place over the label. It is sometimes difficult to tell the type of adhesive that has been used. As a rule of thumb, remember that the water-soluble type is often applied ap-plied only to part of the label and generally used on larger labels. The soaking method with warm water will usually remove the water-soluble adhesive, but it can make the pressure-sensitive label more difficult to remove. APPLIQUES Appliques are sometimes placed on the bottom of the bathtub to keep people peo-ple from slipping. As time goes by, the appliques begin to wear or they need to be changed with the color scheme. In some instances, the appliques can be removed easily. However, sometimes it seems impossible or the top layer will separate leaving a thin film and adhesive on the tub. If this happens, follow this procedure: Try to lift a corner or edge of the film with your fingernail, a chisel-pointed cuti cle stick, or any rigid sharp-edged plastic or wood scraper. Slowly pull up and peel back the film. If the film should tear, try another corner and work toward the center of the applique until all portions are free. If this doesn't work, try the next procedure. Try to lift an edge of the applique. Then apply a generous amount of a commercial prewash spot remover ("Shout," "Spray 'n Wash," "Magic Spray"). Try to get the solution underneath the film' to work on the adhesive. Allow the appliques to soak in the solution for about two hours, then try lifting the appliques from the tub. After peeling the appliques from the tub, there may still be small bits of adhesive on the tub. Again use the commercial prewash spot remover directly on the adhesive to soften or dissolve the adhesive. Or "thumb-roll" the adhesive into small balls much like rubber cement. It may be necessary to repeat part of the proceure. A it Wednesdoy, December 28, 1983 Vernal ExpressAdvertiser 1 9 Salt on walks melts ice, hurts plants Icy sidewalks and driveways are one of the hazards of winter, but using salt to melt the ice isn't advised, according to Duane Hatch, Utah State University Universi-ty horticulturist. Salt accumulation damages grass and other plants around walkways and drives, Mr. Hatch said, and it can also damage the concrete. However, the danger of falls, particularly par-ticularly among the elderly, makes it necessary to melt the ice. Mr. Hatch reommends using fertilizers, such as ammonium sulfate or ammonium nitrate, in place of salt. He said they may damage the concrete, but will benefit the plants. He cautioned not to overdo the use of any ice melting product. "Use just enough to do the job." 5.v If Kendel Asiesen Teisha Shiozaki fei-. i mi linn in.niJ Mmii ..j "33 Remember that some bathtub manufacturers do not recommend using us-ing powdered cleansers, especially on fiberglass tubs. Other suggestions for removing adhesive from surfaces include acetone, fingernail polish remover, warm vinegar, and oil. PURPLE PRICE MARKS Purple price marks which so easily transfer to kitchen counter tops can be removed with a cloth dampened in a solution of half chlorine bleach and half water. Or spray hair spray on the purple price marks and wipe with a clean cloth.
