The other top finishers from the selection event qualified for the United Stales" spots on NorAm Tour, which is the feeder tour for the World Cup and has four stops in North America. 'Hie NorAm event held in Park City ihe Ihird week of December was open to all countries. 'Ilie Wasatch Freestyle Team performed well in the NorAm competition. Jay Bowman - Kir igin, 17, claimed his first NorAm victory in the dual mogujs competition, a race where the youth face oii in a bracket-style competition. If Kirigin emerges the over-. all winner in the other NorAm competil ions he could earn a spot on the U.S. Team. "He's off to a very good start. For a 17-year-old to get on the podium at a NorAm is rare," said O'Brien. Park City Freestyle saw Oaimon liushi and Nick Hanscom qualify and compete in single moguls, and Shawn McGee and Holt Haga qualified in dual moguls competition. "1 was really happy with our team's performance. December even is are always difficult for everybody, because its their first time on snow. We're ready now to gel everybody to the next step. We're really happy with how we did and we only lost one athlete lo injury." said Shirman. In aerial competition, the Utah Olympic Park's (UOP) FLY (Freestyle Lives Yearround) program placed Tim Massuceo and Scott Bahrkc on the U.S. team. Massuceo, a native New Englander joined the FLY program last summer and also trains wilh the Wasatch program in moguls. In the selection competition. Massuceo placed third and sixth in aerials and second and ninth in moguls, making him the only athlete to make the podium in two events at a single selection event. Rahrke is the younger brother of Olympic silver medallist in moguls. Shannon Bahrkc. Last year, the UOP FLY program put Rachael Pack and Jill Priest on the U.S. Freestyle Team. "That's the goal of the program - to put our kids on the U.S. Team. We put two on the team last year. We've become accustomed lo iu" said UOP Fly coach Chris "Hatch" Haslock. In the NorAms. the FLY program had Bahrkc place third as a U.S. learn member in aerials. John Riopcl and Austin Cumrnings look ninth and tenth place, respectively. "We've laid the framework of what we wanted to do. We've spent the money to get the coaches up here. The ability to train year-round is the biggest thing we've got going for us," said Haslock. Park City All-Star, Tanner Hall, a member of the Park City All-Stars won the halfpipe competition al the U.S. Freestyle Selection Event. The halfpipe event will be a part of the World Championships for the first time this season, so the U.S. needed to qualify Americans for the event. Wasatch Freestyle's Tyler Peterson and Joanne Bromfield also did well in competition. "I was stoked by that, because it shows we could compete with the level of Hall. It shows the versatility of our program." said O'Brien." 'Hie success of local teams was a vindication for Park City's freestyle programs. "With our team, we looked at it as a real team project and team mission," said O'Brien. "We looked al it two years ago as something we were training for." O'Brien said that his team's ability to train year round - on the mountain in the winter, and on the water ramps at the UOP and Mt. Hood (a snow-capped volcanic glacier outside of Portland. Ore.) helps his team SCOTT SINE;PARKRECORD slay in racing shape.
