Show I Darts, Vikes win; WX, Braves fall By TOM HARALDSEN Clipper Correspondent Tuesday's girls' prep basketball matchups proved good news for local Region 1 teams, and bad news for Region 6 squads. As the league races draw to a close, the state playoff picture is beginning to become a bit more clear. VIEWMONT 42 BONNEVILLE 38 The Lady Vikings got back on the winning track after a two-game losing streak with a big win over Bonneville, keeping Viewmont in second place with 6-2 mark, one game behind Weber. Tuesday's hero was sophomore Nikki Checketts, who came off the bench to score nine points including a crucial three-pointer and a pair of free throws in the final minute to help preserve the win. Viewmont led by as much as 10 points most of the game, but the Lakers rallied at the end before falling short. Checketts was leading scorer for the Vikes, followed by Jennifer Jones and Heather Le Mmon with eight each, Shannon Morrow and Mandy Miller with six each and Nicki Bumham with five. DAVIS 57 LAYTON 50 In Kaysville, the Lady Darts kept their very slim state playoff hopes alive with a solid win over the Lancers. Davis, now 2-7 in league, needs to win its three remaining games and hope for some others to lose to earn a spot, but the Darts will savor this victory as Rebecca Heusser led the way with 15 points. Melissa McCarty tallied 12 points, all of them from the free throw line (she made 12 of 16), while Reagan Taylor had 10, Lori Rigby eight and Jodi Wimmer seven. I Of those five players, only Rigby is & senior and the rest , are I sophomores on a young but promising Davis team. ' I I MURRAY 40 BOUNTIFUL 39 - ' If you want to know just how balanced Region 6 is, check out this I game, where the host Spartans sank a shot with just two seconds left to edge Bountiful and remain tied for Jordan in first with a 9-2 record. The Lady Braves fell to 7-4, but are still in third, tied with Judge. Nikki Hanni and Kim Reimann led the way for the Braves with 14 apiece, while Jenny Gardner scored seven. The contest was nip-and- tuck all the way. TOOELE 60 WOODS CROSS 50 At Woods Cross, the Lady Wildcats lost a crucial league battle to the Buffaloes in a game that was close all the way. Only in the final moments when Woods Cross was forced to foul, did the visitors pad their margin of victory. The win moved Tooele to 6-5, while Woods Cross dropped to 5-6. With six of the region's teams still fighting for playoff berths, the Wildcats must now win their three remaining games, all on the road, against Bountiful, Murray and Jordan, in order to make the tourney. Noell Goodrich and Alisa Smith led the Wildcats with 12 each, while Amy Turman scored 1 1. |
