Show Gypsy moth containment shown Statewide trapping programs will increase from 161 to 1,000 traps to locate introductions before infestations infesta-tions develop. Environmental assessments were conducted before the eradication program started in 1989. These assessments have been on-going. BOUNTIFUL Area residents met last Thursday, Feb. 7 in the Bountiful City Hall to learn about the 1991 eradication and containment contain-ment treatment program for the gypsy moths in Davis County. If allowed to go uncontrolled, the gypsy moth could potentially damage all vegetation. The moth was first found in Utah in 1988 in the Mt. Olympus Cove area of Salt Lake City. Smaller infestations in-festations were found that same year in Provo Canyon and east Bountiful. Treatment programs started in 1989 when 1,200 acres were sprayed with a biological insecticide. insec-ticide. The moth population in treated areas was reduced by 97 percent the first year and by 89 percent per-cent in 1990. The 1991 treatment program will focus on two areas in Davis County, 3,489 acres in the Parrish Creek region and 4,693 in the Mueller Park vicinity. There appears to be an out-migration out-migration of moths from the treated ' areas. The number of moths caught -in survey traps decreased from 2,274 in 1989 to 527 in 1990. Of the 1990 catches, 286 were trapped outside out-side the 1989 treatment area. These newly discovered moth populations will need treatment this year. Quarantine regulations have been established in Davis, Salt Lake and Utah counties to prevent new infestations. |
