Show Four newpapers honored by UPA eluded photographic techniques, advertising strategies, news coverage and the changing , technological aspects of producing a newspaper. "It was a very exciting conven- ' tion,' said Janice Keller, convention conven-tion organizer. "This is the biggest turnout we've had in eight years." The organization announced the names of the 1991 UPA officers. They are: president, Brent Summer, Orem-Geneva limes; vice president, presi-dent, P. Larry Stahle, Weber State University Signpost, secretary, Bob Prince, Murray Green Sheet and treasurer, Allan Gibson, Nephi Times-News. ST. GEORGE The 98th annual an-nual Utah Press Association (UPA) Winder Convention concluded Saturday Sat-urday with The Manti Messenger, American Fork Citizen, The Tooele Transcript-Bulletin and Deseret News taking the top awards of General Gen-eral Excellence in their respective size classifications. R. Gail Stahle, publisher of The Davis County Clipper and Kaysville Today was the master of ceremonies for the award portion of the program, the Clipper was unable to compete for awards in 1990 because the paper earned the General Excellence award for 1989. In addition to the General Excellence awards, recognition was given in some 20 categories including in-cluding editorial, special section, front page, news photo, editor's column, special section, sports section, sec-tion, feature column, and community communi-ty service. Kaysville Today, a publication that was started in April 1 990, earned earn-ed three, third place awards in the contest. Receiving these honors were Doneta Gatherum for her editor's column, "Columnly Speaking"; Speak-ing"; Kevin Cummings for his feature column, 'Short Cummings" Cumm-ings" and a special section award. Since there was no typography category in the 1989 contest, the Clipper took second place in this area. The 1990 awards mark 40 years of the organization giving recognition recogni-tion to its members for excellence. During the three-day convention, nearly 130 UPA members participated par-ticipated in workshops and seminars sem-inars designed to enhance newspaper skills in all areas of production. pro-duction.
