Show Unemployment compensation expanded for jobless Utahns In November a bill was signed by President Bush which provides emergency unemployment compen- ) sat ion to unemployed workers who have exhausted their regular unemployment benefits. A second bill, increasing the maximum number of weeks of emergency compensation payable from six weeks to 13 weeks, was passed by Congress and signed by I the President on Dec. 4. With passage of that bill Utah claimants who exhausted regular benefits after Feb. 28, 1991 will be able to , file for Emergency Compensation. The first week for which they could file for those benefits was the week beginning Nov. 17, 1991. Terry Bums, unemployment insurance in-surance director for the Utah Department of Employment Security Securi-ty (Job Service), reports that notices have been sent to the last known address of those potentially eligible. The first bill will also increase the maximum number of weeks payable on claims based on military wages from 13 weeks to 26 weeks, decrease the number of days required re-quired for Reserve or National Guard members from 180 days to 90 days to qualify for benefits, and remove the four-week waiting period requirement. Claimants who filed claims based on military wages will have their claims automatically redetermined if they are eligible for increased regular benefits. If they are not eligible eli-gible for increased regular benefits, they will be notified if potentially eligible for emergency compensation. compensa-tion.
