This advertising tool became . very popular. A year after it was first printed, Mr. Call approached . John Stahle, a student at the Univer-. Univer-. sity of Deseret, with the request to " 'look over, some manuscript' that : might be used in his advertising cir-" cir-" c ular which had grown into a community com-munity newspaper. This was the , beginning of a partnership with Lamoni Call as owner and John StcV.e as editor. : ' - The publication used the name "LirJe Clipper" starting with the February 1S51 issue. The name came from a small model clipper ship that was owned by Mr. Call. The name was changed to the Davis County Clipper on April 29, 1892. ; , On June 28, 1892, the partnership between . Lamoni Call and John Stahle was dissolved, and Mr. Stahle became publisher and editor. - In the early days, : Mr. Stahle ', would ride his bicycle through all of Davis County, stopping at homes :; and businesses to gather the news. His idea was to give residents the best news coverage possible. This - philosophy is still the motivating- force behind the Clipper. - For a few years, Mr. Stahle was the owner of the Morgan Post He would , take his , bicycle through Weber Canyon, gathering news throughout Davis County on his return to Bountiful. Advertising is the key to a newspaper's success because this is the main way the publication is finance. In 1892 eleven businesses placed ads in the paper. Subscribers and advertisers quickly learned that whether it was strawberries for sale in Kaysville or straw hats at the Bountiful opera house for only 12 , 12 cents, the best place to look for bargains or to sell merchandise was through the Clipper. As businesses increased in needs and numbers, the Clipper offered a special advertising supplement to its weekly newspaper edition. For 35 years, the Advertiser has been c offering display ads and classifieds to aU residents of South Davis County. . The paper that was started by John Stahle soon involved other members of the Stahle family. In 1913, John Stahle Jr., a teen-ager, started setting type for his father. Today, he still takes an active part in the paper's operation. Starting next week, there will be many changes in Davis County's pioneer paper, but some things will never change. The Clipper will continue con-tinue to give the best news coverage possible combined with advertising that works and a community spirit centered around service. .J; In 1934. Beverly . Craftsmen wrote, "Here is a unique country publication typical of its kind and excelled by none, which has given, the truest and the most complete record of the doings of the people whom it serves.. .never stooping to scandal or intrigues." It was the one and only time the newspaper ever missed its weekly deadline. 'J Always interested in gathering as much news as possible, Mr. Stahle learned that the telephone cduld be an important tool for news gather-0 gather-0 ing. On December 25, 1903, the Clipper printed this request' "Ten rings on the telephone means that the Clipper would like to ask all the people on that particular line at the same time for late- news items." Telephones are still vital to the Clipper's success.
