Show I Taylor students created history : By DONETA GATHERUM CENTERVILLE The fifth graders at J. A. Taylor Elementary School recently transformed their ; multi-purpose room into a walk : back through U.S. historic events. The displays, entitled "Win- dows into History" portrayed through dance, reports, charts, : costumes and artifacts, a living time line of United States history. Beginning with the early explorers explor-ers and colonial America, and progressing through the other major ma-jor developments in history, including in-cluding the Civil War, World Wars I and II, Korea and Vietnam, each student group prepared a lively, illustrated and documented display. dis-play. Some included samples of food. Others had found clothing representing their era. There were many drawings and models mixed with priceless artifacts including war emblems, old lamps and kitchen kitch-en utensils, toys and photographs. Students said they searched the school library and other libraries for information. Many interviewed people who remembered the historic his-toric events. Artifacts were borrowed bor-rowed from family members and neighbors to complete the time line displays. Katie Benz, one of the 60 fifth graders who participated in this activity, said, "I learned a lot. I learned how the people lived, what they wore and what their problems were." The fifth grade teachers at J. A. Taylor Elementary are Jim Harris and Stacy Fanner. |
