The students are two of only 1500 chosen nationally from a total of over 15,700 applicants to attend the university next year as members mem-bers of the freshman class. The criteria for acceptance was based on intellectual capacity, personal achievement in and out of the classroom, clas-sroom, special talents, courses taken, strengths of the high school academic program and ACT test results. Kirsten, the daughter of Colonel Walter and Mrs. Bonnie Novak, was accepted to not only Stanford, but the University of Utah, MIT and Purdue University. She chose Stanford primarily because of the school's emphasis on academic balance. ba-lance. Kirsten said, "Stanford is different from the others because it looks for a person who excels in Sdmething else outside of school, something that they have devoted a lot of time and energy to. For example, ex-ample, they cultivate nationally ranked swimmers and other athletes." Kirsten is a triple-gold medalist skater in the U.S. Figure-Skating Association. She began skating at the age of ten. Although Kirsten plans to pursue pur-sue a major in the field of engineering, engineer-ing, she feels Stanford's solid liberal liber-al arts requirements will be a good complement to her major. Noel Bravo, son of Tony and Re-beca Re-beca Bravo, is among 500 Hispanic students from throughout the United Un-ited States to receive a one year's study scholarship. These top students stu-dents were selected from 3200 semi-finalists based on their overall over-all academic achievements. Noel selected Stanford University Univer-sity because of "the environment and atmosphere and opportunities at Stanford far exceed what I would be able to get elsewhere." Noel is the editor of Layton High School's "Centurion" newspaper and president of the National Honor Hon-or Society. He plans to major in English and then advance to medical school. "I expect to have a whole lot of fun," Noel claimed, "and at the same time, I look to experience some new academic challenges which I had hoped for and set goals for, but have not yet had opportunity opportun-ity to act upon." |
