Show i Layton Council declines hearing on housing project ? By PONETA GATHERUM LAYTON Thursday evening the Layton City Council refused to set a public hearing to consider re-zoning re-zoning property between the Layton Park Plaza and the Central Davis Branch Library to allow construction con-struction of multiple housing units. The request, submitted by Lynn Wood, former Layton councilman, was to change the zoning of 2.63 acres from CP-2 to RM-2. He planned plan-ned to build not more than 72 units on property with no frontage on a public street and that is traversed by Kays Creek. When the matter was considered by the Planning Commission, several sev-eral neighbors attended and ex pressed concerns about the traffic, view obstruction and proximity to the flood plain that would be involved in-volved in the construction of this high density project. The Planning Commission unanimously recommended recom-mended that the rezone be denied. In refusing to set a public hearing to consider the zoning change, council members stated they were concerned about the "sensitive nature na-ture of the property" and the image the city wants to maintain in the Gentile Street area and around the Layton Commons Park, Layton High School and the city administrative adminis-trative building. Councilman Kent Smith said, "I can't see multiple housing in an area that has concentrated public use." |
