Show Arabic science collection comes to Marriott Librarj The Marriott Library recently acquired ac-quired the Martin Levey book collection, col-lection, "one of the finest Arabic science collections in the country" coun-try" according to pr. Everett L. Cooley, curator of the Library s Western Americana collection. The collection contains some 3000 bound books and 1000 manuscripts, manu-scripts, as well as an extensive collection of microfilm and rare books. Marian L. Sheets of the Middle Mid-dle East section estimated that 1000 Arabic scientific manuscripts were recorded on microfilm. Coy Harmon, assistant director of the library, noted that over 100 standard book cartons were required to hold the books. Among the collection are eight unfinished manuscripts by Mr. Levey. About one fourth of the volumes are written in Arabic. The rest are in English and several other European Eu-ropean languages. While the subject sub-ject matter is mainly scientific and medical history, Mr. Harmon noted that the collection covers a wide range of topics. Martin Levey, a noted collector, educator, and linguist, specialized in the science and technology of the ancient Middle East. He had fluent command of the Sumerian, Akkadian, Persian, Arabic, Hebrew, Urdu and Syrian languages as well as German, Spanish, and other modern European languages. After his death in 1970, the Journal of the History of Medicine said of Levey's unfinished writing: "His knowledge was so highly specialized special-ized and his training in languages and history so broad that there are few who could finish.
