Show Issues'topic socialism This fall's Contemporary Issues Is-sues series will open Thursday night with a speech by author and social critic Michael Harrington Har-rington on "Socialism." Harrington, presently chairman chair-man of the Socialist Party in the United States (the party of Eugene Debs and Norman Thomas), entered national attention at-tention in 1962 with the publication pub-lication of "The Other America," an examination of poverty in a supposedly affluent society. The book focuses public awareness aware-ness on the extent of poverty in America 30 years after the Great Depression, and helped inspire the Kennedy-Johnson "war on poverty," to which he was a consultant. Harrington's other works include in-clude "The Accidental Century" (1965), "Toward a Democratic Left" (1968) and the just-published "Socialism," a study of Marx, the interpretations of his thoughts, and the relevance of socialist thinking to current societal so-cietal problems. Harrington remains re-mains a firm believer in demo- cratic socialism as an answer to contemporary problems and totalitarianism. to-talitarianism.
