Show New insurance policy to cover larger range Dr. George R. Edison, director of Student Health Service, stated in a brochure recently' that the service ". . . strongly recommends adequate health and accident insurance for every student . . . ." There are several important exclusions to the new insurance policy, listed in a special pamphlet, at the Service and should be noted. The future plans for Student Health Service? Closer work with dormitory students for one and to "develop our relationship with the University Medical Center. We're working toward that end and always al-ways have been," Dr. Lambrum said. Although the over-all expenses or the Student Health Service at ie University have gone up this ear, a new insurance policy has een developed that will cover a arger range of costs and problem jeas. Under the new insurance policy, :ie company will pay 100 percent f all reasonable expenses for treatment treat-ment received at the service, to a laximum of $5,000 for an accident :nd $500 for an illness. Spouses ;:nd children of students are also icluded and may be covered by ie insurance. Both of these mea-;;jres mea-;;jres are new this quarter. !i The insurance policy is more ex-ensive ex-ensive this year but is sign ificant-'' ificant-'' more expansive. Last year the :olicy paid 75 percent of accidents, Decial medical cases and hospital-:ation hospital-:ation only. The program this year overs not only these areas but rlso ambulatory care at the Health ervice. ',. The Student Health Service, even jithout the insurance, is less ex-3nsive ex-3nsive than off-campus facilities, omparatively, the individual costs -X-rays, blood-tests, minor-treat-ents are less, while these ser-ces ser-ces are more easily available to students in cases of emergency. To further the usefulness of the service center there are also many more special consultants this year in areas such as orthopedics, gynecology, gynec-ology, ears nose and throat and surgery. "In many ways we serve mainly as the family physician because we have both students and staff that are from out of state and even the country," said Dr. Shirley Labrum, assistant director of the Student Health Service. A student with or without insurance insur-ance may use the service anytime for a relatively minor cost. Costs have gone up over the last year at the Health Service primarily because be-cause of a substantial cut in budget funds. A doctor's appointment is $5.00 instead of $2.00. However, medical facilities are still low in price. The Student Health Service feels, however, that with the newly-developed insurance policy, medical expenses ex-penses and problems for students are practically solved. A student is protected under the policy while he is in school, traveling, at home, twenty-four hours a day for the period per-iod for which the premium is paid. |
