Bett i By WAYNE LANGPAP Chronicle Staff The appointment of 15 students to administrative positions on the staff of KUER, the University's non-commercial FM radio station, has been announced an-nounced by Dr. Rex Campbell, director of the University's Division of Radio and Television. The one-year appointments are effective immediately and will extend until next spring. Students appointed to the staff head positions were selected from over 70 applications received and processed since May 17. The selection of students for key positions on the KUER staff is in keeping with a plan released jointly by the Divison of Radio and Television Services and the Department of Speech. The plan outlines an expansion of the University's academic involvement in-volvement in the station through increased student participation and departmental support. Finances have always been a source of problems for the station in the past. Because the plan calls for programming that is more suited to student needs and because of the increased such as rock, blues, jazz or folk music. The aim of the station is to appeal to the students primarily but other programming will be directed at such groups as minoriti;s and senior citizens. Craig Wirth, a junior journalism jour-nalism major with a background in commercial broadcasting, was selected for the top student post of station manager. Kirk Stirland, currently a junior telecommunications major at Utah State University and assistant program director at KUSU-FM was appointed program director. Larry Jackson, a sophomore at the University and a member of the present KUER staff, will assume the position of production director. These three students will also serve as members of the KUER Advisory Board during their one-year one-year appointments. The remaining 12 staff head positions announced included promotion director, Myrna Back-man; Back-man; news coordinator, James Nelson; public affairs director, David Hemingway; sports director, Kim Morris, special events director, Jan Davies; classical music director, Karen utilization of student employment, em-ployment, ASUU will contribute to the funding of the station. Other monies will be provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the newly formed Department of Communications and the University's Division of Radio and Television. The purpose of KUER is to give students practical experience ex-perience in the field of telecommunications and to provide an alternative programming service to the Salt Lake City community. Although the station format has not been definitely worked out, there will likely be a broad mix of programming. Music will range from classical to popular with perhaps entire evenings devoted to specific audiences |
