Show Joseph Fielding Smith, 10th president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died Sunday evening of an apparent heart attack. He was 95. President Smith was born July 19, 1876, the son of Joseph F. Smith, who later became the sixth president of the church. During his long career he served as President of the Council of the Twelve Apostles, Church Historian and General Church Recorder, as well as filling many other positions in the LDS Church and in the community. President Smith became president of the church on Jan. 23, 1970, upon the death of President David 0. McKay. Considered an authority on church history, President Smith wrote many books, articles, pamphlets and columns dealing with church history and doctrine. |
