Show Before the show, anticipation BY RICHARD ROMNEY Entertainment Editor 4 pjn-the men behind the scenes-the stage crew, the light man, the sound technician were there. The Lettermen were not. He men set down and started talking, telling jokes. The light "We don't have to pay if they don't show up." the man upstairs responds. I sit around for quite a while, then check the office again. Still' no word. I tell the secretaryjll be back in half an hour, and walk down to my car. Somebody at I Fort Douglas is playing the I national anthem in the back- ground. , Back at the Dome, some dude's ' down on stage getting the lights - focused on him. All that's on the . stage is a piano and a microphone. The men are still working, checking chec-king colored lights. The stage is in-j in-j pink right now. j There are maybe 10 people in ! the 15,000 seat arena. Five are in ! the seats going over the production produc-tion scripts. The black cords leading lead-ing to the spots dangle above the stage like a snake. Some girls by one of the doors up above giggle. I didn't notice them before. Wonder how they got in. Maybe friends in high places. Fesendon's not back yet. The lady in the office says he won't be back till six, so I tell her I'll just wait in the arena. m nm i ifjr- ' -mwssp ' ,. A vacuum cleaner swept the carpet under the folding chairs on the floor of the area. A basketball standard from last night's game was tipped on it's side, on a cart so that it could be moved without scratching the floor. The men talked about getting a nise. The light man checks one of to spotlights. One of the stage mw says that the Lettermen are signing autographs at the same Grand Central where the kid was shot the night before, and that toy won't get to the Sports and pecial Events Center until five or the Lettermen. I go back rod sit halfway down the arena seats. , "All right, where are they, little fat man," a crew member yells up "'the control box. Well, let's be ready for 'em when they come. All we need now is a group." Now there are four amps, three stand mikes, three hand mikes and the piano on stage. There's a frat man sitting a row or two back who wants to ask the Lettermen to the house after the show. "They usually come over after," he says. Everybody's just kind of sitting around, wating and the anticipation anticipa-tion builds. It's ten minutes to five. "They're here," someone says. They open the door for their bus, and take the carts up to get their equipment and bring it in. J0NY BUTALA -n California quake -Photos by Allan Thelin |
