Show 1 Slating game I election fun 1 Something needs to be said about the slating game going on in the present ASUU elections. The primary electons g knocked out four of the presidential parties What has : happened to their party? What is happen mg to ose assemblycandidates who ran on a presidential slate that lost g S; in the primary election? -winnine ' IS Most of them have switched to one of the w S candidates' slate, some are running independently of any I slate, and some are running with a write-in presidential g I Thelating game has turned into a money making venture g I in campaign funds for the presidential candidates. For the g I assembly candidates, it allows them to asso ate with a g S "glamorous name." With this type of set up, the party which I evolves is built entirely around the president, his personal views and desires and platforms. Without the president, there g is evidently little there to rally around. None of the issues are g I unique enough and the commitment to the platform is not g strong enough to run under without a presidential name at g 5 the head of it. This means that slating turns the election ol g the assembly into a popularity contest, not on the assembly s candidates' appeal, but on the presidential candidates per- sonality. , S $ This does not fulfill the purpose of slating; to elect a 6 president and enough of the assembly men who think the 8 same and hold the same ideas about the major issue so that ;g I "their" programs can be passed. If the assembly candidates g I do not hold the same beliefs the presidents do, and run with g I presidents not because of ideology but because of the g I popularity of the president, then there has been no reason for g I slating except for money and popularity, for the elected g I administration will not be able to pass their programs. g I If slating remains as it has so far developed, it should be g: I restricted to the final race. For it to be really effective, it g should be built around a party with a definite idea about campus programs and problems and solutions and a unique g method of handling them. This would give the party validity g f even without a presidential head and it would give a reason g for the assembly candidates to be running together. g |
