Show Vista for whom? Pensamientos Vista: This is a Spanish word meaning a beautiful beauti-ful view, scenery, the act of seeing or to have good vision. Too bad that such a beautiful word has been distorted and used once again, to stereotype the minorities and so that Americana and all its middle class values can live off the misery of blacks Chicanos, American Indians and poor whites. Volunteers Vol-unteers in Service to America is American social neurosis at its best. The program, designed during the Kennedy Administration out of need for a drastic change, concerning the ghettos, barrios and reservations has gotten out of proportion. Because this writer was in the midst of the organization for three months, in the Western region which includes Utah, Colorado and New Mexico, an evaluation is due. Training is geared for the white, middle class neurotic who is avoiding die draft, has personal conflicts or has personal, mental conflicts with himself, or has just acquired a sociological or educational degree from some accredited school and has found it useless. These then are die social skills the male and female volunteers bring with them to work with simple people. I'm leaving out the best skill that of having no understanding about the people they are supposed to serve and are getting paid to serve. Time and time again projects have been started and folded in the face of reality. Time and overtime is spent in attending meaningless meetings and strategy planning sessions on how to attack the community problems and poverty! Who is VISTA for? Who is Model Cities for? Who is Migrant Council for? Not for the poor! |
