Show Movement-up in flames We need to ease the tension and stop the violence which is beginning to appear on this campus. During the last weeks' activities, we have had a bomb in the ROTC building, a mob in the Chronicle office, bomb threats in the Park Bldg., stink bombs in Orson Spencer Hall and Monday we had a fire on campus. The Intercultural Center was set on fire during the noon rally on the Union lawn. Compared to other campuses we have been extremely lucky. But, does bombing or burning a building signify accomplishment. It does not. What were the results? Will President James C. Fletcher change his statements? Will President Richard M. Nixon immediately withdraw troops from Cambodia? Will the University students start boycotting classes? Will it bridge the polarization appearing on this campus? It will not. The building was a superfluous structure to be torn down the end of this week. But this is no excuse for the action. The burned building will not disastrously affect the University landscape. It will show its affects in the reforms the University is attempting. The few who are responsible for the burned building have used the conscientious protest of others for their own destructive purposes. It is a mistake to blame those seeking reform, those favoring a strike or the entire left movement with the irrational actions of an obvious few. It is the responsibility re-sponsibility of this group, however, to see that further violence vio-lence and destruction is not initiated, that the University allows expression on both sides without resorting to childish . actions. We should not lose the spirit to correct those imperfections imper-fections we see. Change can be made and most effectively through legitimate channels. The channels have never worked before because no one has used them. The Executive Council of elected studentbody representatives should cope with the current topics. The Student Liason Committee should hear the demands then they should proceed to Institutional In-stitutional Council. They can work if we make them, much more effectively than burning a building. |
