Show Redskins wreck Wyoming five; fflTEi? losesf BY TOM WHARTON Sports Writer Utah may have won a battle Saturday afternoon, but it remains re-mains to be seen if they win the war. However, if the Redskins play anything like they did in their 113-82 win over Wyoming Saturday Satur-day afternoon, UTEP and Arizona better get out their peace pipes. After a very dismal performance perform-ance on Thursday against Colorado Colo-rado State, the Utes played one of their best team games of the season. Although Mike Newlin hit 29 points to lead all scorers, Walt Hawkins and Ken Gardner played the key roles in the big win. Hawkins Stars Hawkins broke the game wide open with several quick first half steals which were converted into baskets. The ball-hawking 'Hawk' fired up the Utes with his rebounding rebound-ing and stealing skills and kept the 10,544 fans on their feet much of the game. Hawkins also did a great job in defensing Wyoming star Stan Dodds. Dodds only hit six points in the first half and this fact hurt Wyoming's performance. The Cowboys' other star, Carl Ashley, was held to seven points in the first half when Utah walked away with an insurmountable 58-31 58-31 lead. Ashley ended the game with 20 and Dodds with 19 but most of these points came in the late second sec-ond half with Wyoming '30 points down. Tough on Boards Gardner, also hitting 19 points, came down with 12 rebounds to pace the tough Utes. Utah hit an amazing 56.1 percent per-cent even with subs in for the final five minutes and completely com-pletely dominated a rather dull game on the boards, baskets and defense. Utah committed only 8 turn overs in the game compared to Wyoming's 20 and committed very few mistakes. Seniors John Hunter, Bob Martin, Mar-tin, and Hawkins all played their last home game and were a 1 1 honored with standing ovations as they left the floor. Next Week Next week, the Utes close out their season with two crucial games at New Mexico and UTEP. Should they win both games, the conference crown would be theirs. Should the Utes win one and lose the other, the conference crown wouldn't be decided until UTEP met New Mexico at New Mexico the next week. If Utah lost both games, they would have to contend with Arizona Ari-zona for second place and an NIT bid. It seems likely, however, howev-er, that the Utes should have second place wrapped up because Colorado State on the road. 7 it jit Utah's 6-10 center Jim Mahler goes up for two of his 11 points apis Wyoming Saturday.
