Show Greeks Influential By DOUGLAS C. SMITH Chronicle Staff Writer Students need to be oriented in campus activities and organizations through incentives. The group that best orients its members in campus cam-pus activities has the greatest influence in-fluence at the University. Lowell Bennion, associate dean of students; Steve Swinney, public relations director of the fraternity system; and Lee Burnham, special assistant to ASUU President John Kesler, consider strong campus involvement in-volvement of fraternities and sororities soror-ities to be a result of better orientation orien-tation of the individual. Dean Bennion determined fraternity-sorority influence is not only due to its own action. He stated, "It is not that the fraternities and sororities are too active; there is a great deal of apathy and reticence on campus about moving in. The Greeks moved into a vacuum." He pointed out that the University Univer-sity is a commuter school. With many of its students coming and going to and from the campus as though it were just an extension of high school, many students never nev-er feel involved in campus affairs. Get Organized Asked about non-affiliated students stu-dents living in the residence halls, he replied, "There is no reason they should be less active; they are just not organized." Ten years ago Dean Bennion said elections for ASUU President always al-ways pitted a Greek with an inde pendent, with an independent, with affiliation as an election issue. This is no longer the case. Realize Potential Dean Bennion suggested that each group on campus, for example, the International House, the residence resi-dence halls, and the religious groups, should realize its potentialities potential-ities in influencing campus affairs. He said that each incoming freshman fresh-man should be aware of all organizations organi-zations on campus before he decides de-cides to select membership with one over the others. "Fall rush," viewed Burnham, "should be abolished for freshmen until he has one or two quarters of experience on campus." |
