Show WAC Golf Record Bruce Cops Title By REECE STEIN Ute golfer Bruce Summerhays took some of the glory away from BYU by taking medalist honors and setting a new conference con-ference mark at the fourth annual an-nual Western Athletic Conference Confer-ence golf championships at Provo Pro-vo Friday and Saturday. AN AMAZING Cougar team, which seemed to know every blade of grass on the Riverside Country Club course, placed four men in the top six and easily copped team honors with a 54-hoIe total of 845 for its four low men. That score along with the Cats' 36-hole total were conference records. All five Cougars Cou-gars finished under par and only two of their 15 18-hole rounds were over par. Utah slipped to fourth in the final round while New Mexico finished second at 869, 24 strokes off the pace, Arizona State moved ahead of Utah the final day with an 871 aggregate, Utah had 879, Wyoming 915 and Arizona 921. his own WAC mark with a sizzling sizzl-ing second round six under par 66 and combined it with a 69 the first to set a 36-hole record of 135. But Coker ran into trouble Saturday and boggied the third hole, double-boggied the fourth, boggied the fifth, sixth, seventh, 15th and 17th for a six over par 78 and a 213 total for fifth. SUMMERHAYS combined two 70's with a great 67 the second round to finish three under the conference mark set last year bv Coker at 207. He had eight birdies on the second 18 and three boegies for his 67. Bruce tore up the course on the front nine Saturday and made the turn four under at 32. But bog-gies bog-gies on the 14th and 16th and no birdies pushed him back to 70. Two Cougars tied the old WAC record of 210 and it appeared ap-peared Jack Chapman, Mike Taylor and Bud Allin would tear up the record books, but over par rounds for Chapman and Taylor and a 71 for Allin gave Bruce the title. DANNY BAGERAS shot a fine 54-hole total of two over par 218 to finish 11th of the 30-man field. A double boggy on the fifth Saturday ended his chances to finish under par after aft-er a 73 and a 71, he carded a two over 74- Gary Summerhays finished 73-74-73220 for 14th, Tom Morgan had 76-80-78 234 while Reid Goodliffe tied him with a 78-79-77234 tally. Dave Han-ten Han-ten of Arizona State and Mike Taylor of BYU were the only two to sink eagles. Hanten dropped in his second shot on the four par 14th while Taylor sunk his third on the five par 11th. The course was in good shape and the tremendous weather wea-ther and lack of wind that featured last year's meet in Albuquerque Al-buquerque accounted for the abundance of low scores. Next year's meet will be held in Arizona if they get their track finished in time to host the spring games. Conference marks were dime-a-dozen on the tricky Riverside course as defending king Ralph Coker of New Mexico had a field day Friday. Coker broke |
