Show Seniors Swing to Wilson Band . - . :, , 7 ' : " : .... - ': -:-. y ;. , '- "!- ' X y 'A have been so few ; great Big Bands in the history of jazz that the establishment of another one filling that category is a notable event. . . The Gerald Wilson Orchestra is the most recent addition ad-dition to the ranks of Ellington, Basie, Herman, and Kenton." WHILE THE name of Gerald Wilson may be new to many people, he is, at 45 years of age, one of the most respected composer-arrangers in the jazz and pop field. He gained much of his early musical experience performing in the trumpet sections of the Dizzy Gillespie and Count Basie Orchestras in the 1940's, and contributed arrangements to these bands ajid to the Duke Ellington Orchestra. SINCE THE collapse of the Big Band Era, Wilson has resided re-sided in California where he has been active as leader of his own orchestra and arranger for ar tists such as Ray Charles and Nancy Wilson. He also scores music for movies and television. The University has not had an exciting big name band perform per-form on campus for a number of years, so it will be a special treat for this year's seniors as they shuffle their feet to the sounds of the Gerald Wilson Band. SENIORS may obtain tickets for the dinner and dance, free of charge, at the alumni house, 1471 Federal Way (west of the Engineering Building). Dinner will be served in two shifts at 7 and 8 p.m. You must have a ticket for you and your partner, part-ner, so don't wait until its too late. Seldom do students receive free food and superb entertainment, entertain-ment, but then they've earned it! This is what's happening seniors sen-iors See you there! On June 9 seniors and their partners will swing to the sounds of the Gerald Wilson Orchestra. . Although relatively unknown in this area (because the majestic ma-jestic mountains 'of the Great Basin provide such a formidable barrier to all but a few popular popu-lar names in the music world), the Gerald Wilson Band has earned the praise of the most stringent critics, and holds the coveted distinction as the finest new band in the country. THIS IS not another tired, listless aggregate of amateur musicians performing prosaic arrangements ar-rangements of antiquated pop tunes, but an exciting, swinging Big Band of the nation's finest musicians. . John William Hardy, noted music critic, wrote of the Wilson Wil-son Band on the "ner notes of one' of their six L.P. s, There Trumpeter Gerald Wilson and his jazz orchestra will entertain enter-tain Seniors and partners at this year's graduation dance. |
