Show Will Issues Be Aired ? By ZANE R. MISKIN A close analogy can be drawn between be-tween the mess in Salt Lake County government gov-ernment and ASUU-University procedures. proce-dures. Both aTe a mess. Waste and corruption are prevalent ,- s on the campus scene as well as downtown. Inefficiency In-efficiency is the status quo. To give specific examples: $50,000 for "inspection fees" out of the $285,000 budgeted for the Crimson Commons Com-mons construction. This is over 17 of the total and even at $50 an hour parking. Surely there are other buildings available in the city for this purpose. Cars are parked 4 abreast by the chain at 3rd South and Spencer Drive. Citations are not issued. But on weekends, woe be unto the student who has the trepidation to park there! (Incidentally, it is not posted for no parking.) Apparently, the rules come and go. And there is no effective ef-fective appeal. Today students will go to the polls to affirm the ASUU Constitution and to select student body officers for the coming year. These officers will get scholarships for their efforts in student government and will receive a title on the door and a Bigelow on the floor. Is it too much to expect that they represent repre-sent the students' interest in return for this? Candidates are extremely limited in the time and money they can spend on their campaigns. Regulations are set down 'by the Elections Committee. Candidates Can-didates are generally restricted to 5 minute min-ute speeches and $35 worth of campaign cam-paign material. How in heaven's name can a responsible candidate develop an effective program in 5 minutes? Are we deliberately gearing for mediocrity? Student government is a joke on this campus. The reason: It's played as a game. When students, faculty, administration, adminis-tration, and candidates begin to take it seriously; when stu dentP . given the power of sdW criminal waste. ; . The parking problem is still with us. Proposed solutions by the University are slated in the far far distant future. The problems are with us now. The campus clowns-in-residence, the University police, po-lice, have a dangerous autonomy. They give traffic citations when and where they feel like it. If the day is cold and miserable, miser-able, ticket production drops. On sunnv days, look out! During evening class schedules, when the area around OSH is packed, the U is host to traffic school, which produces another 300 competitors for the limited s |
