Senior Debators Cop Sweepstakes Trophy Combined team efforts by the University debaters resulted in the winning of the senior division divi-sion sweepstakes trophy last weekend at the Linfield College Tournament in McMinnville, Ore., the oldest continuing annual an-nual forensics tournament in the United States. FORTY-SIX schools from Iowa to California participated in contests con-tests in Oxford (regular) debate, Lincoln - Douglas debate (one speaker on each side), extemporaneous extempor-aneous speaking, impromptu speaking, oratory, interpretative reading, salesmanship and interview inter-view presentations, radio speaking, speak-ing, and after-dinner speaking (humorous). Utah teams and individuals placed higher than in any previous pre-vious year. First place trophies were won by Grant Kesler in senior men's Lincoln-Douglas debate, de-bate, Linda Jenson in senior women's Lincoln - Douglas debate, de-bate, Kay Israel and Blaine Carlton Carl-ton in junior men's Oxford debate, de-bate, Dick Brown in senior men's impromptu speaking, and Joe Scott in junior men's after-dinner speaking. DICK BROWN also took second sec-ond in senior men's Lincoln-Douglas Lincoln-Douglas debate, Linda Jenson and Bonnie Thorup second in senior women's Oxford debate, Grant Kesler second in senior men's interview, and after-dinner speaking, Joe Scott second in junior men's interview, and Joan Petersen second in junior women's interview. THIRD place certificates went to Bruce Pingree in radio speaking, speak-ing, Steve Wood in senior men's extemporaneous speaking, Pat Judkins in senior women's inter- view, and Blaine Carlton in iun- ior men's impromptu. Kay Israel qualified for the finals of the junior men's Lincoln-Douglas debate de-bate but had to drop out because be-cause the finals for that event and those for the Oxford debate de-bate in which he and Blaine Carlton took first were held simultaneously. si-multaneously. UNIVERSITY debate coaches Dick Birrell, Lawrence Silvey, and Gay Daleabout and graduate student Kathy Snow accompanied accompan-ied the debate squad on the five-day trip. George Adamson, University debate coach, said, "I regard this as the second outstanding achievement of the year. Taking the senior sweepstakes at two big meets as tough as the Western West-ern Forensic and Linfield certainly cer-tainly constitutes a successful year. The University should be proud of these debaters who represent rep-resent us so well." Debate tournaments coming up in the spring qurater include the Delta Sigma Rho-Tau Kappa Alpha national tournament, sponsored spon-sored by the debate honor society so-ciety and held in Reno, Nev. |
