Show Twins Capture A. L. Flag; L.A. ,S.F. Lead N.L. Race By MAC BACKMAN Chronicle Sports Writer While pro and college football players are banging heads in weekly games, major league baseball is still very much in today's to-day's news. The National League's pennant race is going down the home stretch with the San Francisco Giants, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Cincinnati Reds all having hav-ing good shots for the league crown. Hot pennant races happen hap-pen annually in the senior circuit cir-cuit and this year is no exception. excep-tion. Two out of the last three seasons have seen the National Na-tional League second place team finish only one game behind be-hind the pennant winner. The 1962 Dodgers were one game behind the pennant-winning Giants. Last year, the St Louis Cardinals sneaked a pennant under BOTH the Philadelphia Phillies' and Cincinnati Reds' noses by a margin of a single game. At this writing, the Dodgers had overcome a 4'2 game Giant lead to tie the race up. Dodger righthander Don Drysdale shut out the Cardinals, 1-0, while Milwaukee's Braves edged the Giants, 3-2, in Sunday's games to throw the race into a deadlock. Cincinnati lost a chance to move up by losing to the Houston Astros, 4-2, but the Reds are only three games behind the leaders. The Minnesota Twins clinched the American League pennant by beating the Washington Wash-ington Senators, 2-1, Sunday It's the first pennant for tne Twin Cities since they moved there in 1961. Ironically, the Twins defeated Washington, the city the Twins left in 1961. No matter what the outcome of the National League pennant race is, the Twins and the Dodgers Dodg-ers would have to both be ranked as the comeback teams of the year. Both teams finished in sixth place last year after excellent ex-cellent 1963 seasons. That year the Dodgers won the National League pennant and the Twins finished a strong third in the A.L. Last year, however, neither team could bet going and fell far below preseason predictions. predic-tions. This year, these two "disappointments" could meet in the world series unless the Giants and the Reds decide de-cide otherwise. So, it's the Twins and Anybody's Any-body's Guess in the World Series. |
