Show Stein Song By REECE STEIN Chronicle Sports Editor The Western Athletic Conference is proving to be about as predictable as the National League Pennant race. BYU was tabbec for the cellar again but has shocked two squads to lead in overall wins after three weeks of play. Utah and New Mexico, co-holders of last year's crown with Arizona, haven't faired so well while the Wildcats were dumping Kansas at Kansas and supposedly strong Arizona State hasn't been able to get off the ground. But the title race is very erratic because of the variety in WAC club schedules. For the first time in the four-year history of the conference Arizona State will be eligible for the title, although it appears they do not stand much hope. The Sun Devils in the past have only been able to schedule two or three WAC foes while four is mandatory for title eligibility. WYOMING HAS TRADITIONALLY been offensively minded and has the power all-around to bear that out this year. QB Tom Wilkinson and all-WAC end Darryl Alleman lead the attack backed up by the fine running ability of halfs Don Klacking and Mike Davenport. Arizona has the speed to knock off the Pokes in their meeting Saturday but the depth still lies with Wyoming. Ute fans need not be reminded of the fine Cat QB Phil Albert and the running of Fro Brigham and Brad Hubbert. BRIGHAM YOUNG was dubbed with cellar honors until knocking off Arizona State and Kansas State in light fashion. Led by one of the finest passers in the WAC, Virgil Carter, the Cats have a good offense. Back are all-WAC fullback John Ogden plus speedsters Steve Ogden and Kent Oborn and powerful Kent Nance. Ten transfers have bolstered Coach Tom Hudspeth's line. New Mexico and Arizona State were named as top prospects before the season began, but so far neither one has pulled off a win. The Lobos dropped their opener to pass-happy Texas Western, while A-State has fallen to BYU and Utah State. So color Wyoming the WAC champ with Arizona the contender con-tender and the 'Y' the darkhorse. Let New Mexico try for its fourth year in the title slot, mark Arizona State in the second division and pray for Utah. |
