Show Pres. Fletcher Will Honor Three Leaders Doctorates Planned For Ward, Wallace, Derrick A noted British economist, a leading Utah industrialist and University official, and a prominent promi-nent banker and community leader lead-er will receive honorary Doctoral degrees at the University's 96th Annual Commencement Exercises, Exer-cises, June 11. PRES. JAMES C. Fletcher said the University will honor Miss Barbara Ward, one of England's most challenging contemporary writers on economic and political politi-cal subjects; Royden G. Derrick, President and General Manager of Western Steel Company and Chairman of the University Board of Regents; and John M. Wallace, Wal-lace, Chairman of the Board, Walker Bank and Trust Company Com-pany and former Mayor of Salt Lake City. Miss Ward, who has been cited as "one of the most widely wide-ly read and influential persons in the entire Western world," will also deliver the Commencement Commence-ment Address, Friday, June 11, at 7 p.m. in the Stadium Bowl. SHE IS an editor of "The London Lon-don Economist," a specialist in both economics and foreign affairs, af-fairs, the author of three books, a popular radio commentator in her native England and an eloquent elo-quent performer on the lecture platform. Miss Ward has been described as "almost unfairly talented." BARBARA WARD was born in Yorkshire and educated at the Convent, Felixtowe, and at the Lycee Moliere and at the Sor-bonne Sor-bonne in Paris. She also studied in Germany and at Somerville College, Oxford, Ox-ford, where she took a "first" in "Modern Greats," the equivalent of a summa cum laude Bachelor's degree in politics, philosophy and economics. SHE HAS received honorary degrees from Harvard University, Univer-sity, Columbia University, Smith College, Fordham University and many others. " In 1939 she bacame assistant editor of "The Economist" and has been connected with the paper ever since. SHE HAS been Governor of the British Broadcasting Corporation Cor-poration end of London's Sad-lers Sad-lers Wells and Old Vic Theater. In 1950 Miss Ward married Commander Robert G. A. Jackson Jack-son of Australia, an economist, f - . - " GvlJ formerly an Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations. SHE IS now known equally as well throughout the world as "Lady Jackson." Miss Ward is a speaker of unusual un-usual ability and is known to millions for her appearances on such programs as "The Great Challenge" and "Meet the Press." DERRICK is married to the former Allie Olson of Monroe, Mon-roe, Utah. They have four children. chil-dren. The third honorary degree will be given to Mr. John M. Wallace, a native of Salt Lake City. MR. WALLACE received his B.A. degree from the University of Utah in 1916; and a Master of Business Administration degree de-gree from Harvard University in 1921. He has been with the Walker Bank and Trust Company in Salt Lake City since 1923 and is presently Chairman of the Board. MR. WALKER is also a co-owner co-owner of Redwood Investment Company; Vice President and Director, Di-rector, Banner Mining Company; and Vice President and Director, Direc-tor, Arizona Ranch and Metals Company. He is a Director of the Western West-ern Bancorporation; Western Air Lines, Inc.; and KSL, Inc. MR. WALLACE'S other activ ities include Member of the Lay Board, Holy Cross Hospital; Member, Board of Trustees, Westminster College; and Associate Asso-ciate Officer of the British Venerable Ven-erable Order of St. John of Jerusalem. He is a member of the Presbyterian Presby-terian Church and a thirty-second degree Mason (KCCH). THE UTAH banker was President Presi-dent of the Salt Lake City Chamber Cham-ber of Commerce, 1936-37; Mayor of Salt Lake City, 1938-39; and a Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army, 1955-59. He was appointed a member of the Coordinating Co-ordinating Council of Higher Education by Utah Governor George D. Clyde in 1959. Mr. Wallace was Chairman of the Army Advisory Committee in Salt Lake City for 10 years. HE IS married to the former Glenn Walker. They have two children. Miss Ward, Mr. Derrick and Mr. Wallace will receive their honorary doctoral degrees at the University's newly revised commencement com-mencement exercises Friday, June 11, at 7 p.m. in the Stadium Bowl. UNDER THE new plan, Honorary, Hon-orary, Ph.D. and Ed.D. degrees will be awarded Friday evening. All other degrees will be conferred, con-ferred, but the actual awarding of diplomas will take place Saturday, Sat-urday, June 12, at individual College Col-lege Convocations. THEY WILL be held simultaneously simul-taneously at various parts of the campus with representatives of the Regents and Administration joining the dean of the college for the ceremonies. The separate convocations will enable the University to focus more individual attention on each graduate. The 96th Annual Commencement Commence-ment activities will include a Senior Dinner Dance, Thursday, June 10; and the President's Reception Re-ception honoring the graduating class and their families Friday afternoon, June 11. |
