Show Diamondmen Review Series Before Conference Games Utah took it on the chin Monday Mon-day and lost their baseball game to Brigham Young University by an overwhelming score of 10 to 3. THE HIGHPOINT of the game came when the big gunner for the Y, Bud Parker smashed an infield homer during the fifth inning of the game. The former Californian brought in three runs with his hit off the centerfield fence. And with this the University baseball team enters the last week of their regular campaign with five crucial conference games on the slate. ALL OF THE battles are on the road and despite the fact that the Redskins enter the final week with a three game lead over BYU and Wyoming they still have a big chore ahead in wrapping up the Northern Division Divi-sion Title of the Western Athletic Ath-letic Conference. The Utes are 5-2 in league play and 18-10 overall. Wyoming Wyo-ming and BYU have marks of 2-4, 3-4, respectively. The Cowboys Cow-boys actually are still right in the race since they play their final six tussles at home. FRIDAY IT'S a singles game with Wyoming and then Saturday Satur-day at Laramie to wrap up the season. Coach Pres Summerhays feels that the big factor this week will be pitching depth. With six league games, the Utah hurling staff will be well tried. ALSO, BAD weather in recent re-cent days might have taken some of the edge off some improved im-proved Ute hitting. Actually the Redskins have gone more than a full week without competition prior to the BYU game. Duane Freeman and Steve Radulovich are setting a torrid pace for Western Conference batters, at the end of the first round of games in the league's northern division. FREEMAN is clouting the ball at .619 and also leads in total bases with 22. Radulovich is hitting .500 for six games. Fifteen Fif-teen other players have batting averages above .300. Utah (5-1) leads the division in team standings (.833) and in team batting with a fat .328, while Wyoming (2-4) and Brig-ham Brig-ham Young (2-4) trail in batting with .268 and .265 respectively. Leading pitchers are Utah's Dave Varvel and John Noriega, and Wyoming's Ken Hemming, each 20. Varvel's 2.25 earned-run earned-run average is tops for the division. |
