Carothers, professors of higher education at Florida State University. Uni-versity. Professors Stickler and Carothers Caro-thers believe the year-round calendar cal-endar will "provide a better vehicle ve-hicle fdr dealing with the vast numbers of students" included in what is termed the "tidal-wave" "tidal-wave" of increasing college enrollments. en-rollments. As a result of the trend toward to-ward year - round operation, Stickler and Carothers stated, aggressive efforts are being made to upgrade summer sessions. ses-sions. Stickler and Carothers see the emergence of two systems of e-quitable e-quitable faculty pay which will operate with the development o' the year-round operation. These are: "(1) 12-month salaries with provision for regular leave from teaching duties; or (2) adoption of the principle of equal pay for equal periods of faculty time." THE TWO educators recognize several problem areas" arising from year-round operation. "No doubt the most difficult administrative adminis-trative problem," they state, "is that of getting faculty members to go to school during the summer sum-mer months." Faculty problems, they said, include recruitment, pay scales, and a decision as to what constitutes consti-tutes "an adequate and appropriate appro-priate workload for a faculty member." |
