Show Utes Split Doublereader Gary Sutherland, Mesa pitcher needed to help in the night cap after walking three Utes in the second. A reliever came in to put out the fire and went on to post the win. Utah will move to Pocatello next weekend for a twin bill with Idaho State Saurday then return to Salt Lake City to try, once more, for a home town debut against ISU. Dave Varvel gave up but one run in the opening game of a double header in Grand Junction, Colorado, to lead Utah to a 2-1 win over Mesa College. TWO MESA hurlers ganged up on the Ute batters to hold the Red scoreless in the cap and gain for the Mesa nine a 3-0 win and a split in their season debut. For the Utes it was win number two against seven defeats. The Redskins took care of all scoring early in the day as they racked up their two runs in the first inning of the first contest. Centerfielder Doug Wasko opened the Ute rally with a single. 'First sacker Duane Freeman advanced Wasko with a double and catcher Gary Selby brought in the two tallies with a single. MESSA'S Jerry Chick unnerved un-nerved the Ute hurler in the second sec-ond inning by opening with a double. Varvel then walked three straight to force in a run and spoil the shut out. |
