Show The Dead Day Test Week Vacation A so-called dead day was given a trial run during last quarter's test week. For some students an extra 24 hours of uninterrupted study time was heaven sent, while to others it was a Fourth of July weekend, another day in the Huddle, or time to read some back issues of Esquire Magazine. Regardless of the good times had by all during those extra study hours, there are those of us who are silently wondering won-dering whether or not excusing students from classes the Tuesday of exam week contributed to campus scholarship. Many students scheduled for a final exam in a two hour class were by necessity not excused from their tests to studyv In other instances, a few students who visited their 8:50 perhaps twice during the quarter sat rigidly behind their textbooks text-books with a do or die attitude through the free day. Surprisingly enough, some instructors excused their students stu-dents Monday which gave many the opportunity to study two days straight without the "nuisance" of a long walk to class or having to leave the cafeteria. With such ideal conditions, no one could imagine any unhappy students. But the general student feeling was not one of gratitude, but one of irritation. For students who did not have a final exam until Thursday, the agony of waiting and preparing for the first test was unbearable. Students were heard to comment that they couldn't get anything accomplished, ac-complished, that they were bogged down with the business of studying. In a word, they were in a hurry. Many wanted to get to vacation spots or just to return home. Since no one looks forward to finals the two or three day waiting period before they began seemed equal bnly to eternity. As for the ASUU Senate, in a try-to-please-everybody position, it now appears they just can't win. No matter whether wheth-er students are given extra hours to study or required to attend at-tend class, they still complain. At face value, a dead day appears to us to be at b.est most ineffective. The good student does not rely on his final exam grades completely for an "A" in the class. Nothing can make up for wasted hours .earlier in the quarter quar-ter which could have been spent studying not ever a dead day. Students who can go skiing on borrowed study time, can just as well spend those hours in class. Although the notion of a dead week has become an extremely ex-tremely popular topic throughout the nation's universities, it is a question yet to be resolved on our own campus. To give students a free day of study is both an act of kindness and a step towards insanity. We must question whether this time will be used wisely. |
