Show 9 Ibunna, (lut 9 Jteand. By STEVtl WILLIAMS Funeral services were held Tuesday aflernoon in Dalia for Frank S. Beckwith, 51, publisher of Ihe Millard County Chronicle, who died Saturday in Salt Lake after a heart attack. Interest is mounting in the challenge mayor's horse race scheduled for the second day of the Forty-Niners, and Southern Utah mayors are looking around for good quarter-horses. Mayor Ray Kizer has arranged ar-ranged for a 4 year old stallion from the stables of Ken Adams, a quarter-horse breeder at Sutherland, up Delta way, and we understand hizzoner is planning plan-ning to hang on tight at the starting gate, so the fast-stepper won't run out from under him. At least that's what the kid-ders kid-ders are saying, but they forget that Ray was a regular cowhand in his earlier days, and hasn't forgotten which side of a horse is "south." Seems we made a mistake last week in our cutline on the sixth grade traffic patrol. It was Mary Ann Banks instead of Judy Rae Banks who was holding hold-ing the award certificate. But The News isn't the only paper to let errors creep by Wednesday morning's Tribune carried a picture of three Milford Mil-ford queen contestants, along with Mayor Kizer, and Farrell Fotheringham holding the trophy tro-phy which Gov. Lee will present pre-sent to the winner of the racing mayor contest. Only the Tribune Trib-une cutline said the Governor would present Farrell to the winning mayor! ! Farrell says he don't think he wants to leave Milford not with our annual celebrations being so much fun. Wonder how Dan Valentine is coming along with his chick-pox? chick-pox? Seems he broke out all over, "like King Farouk with bumps," after his offspring had brought home the pox from one of his schoolmates. We haven't checked with Val-- Val-- entine, but Doc Symond assures us that he should be over them in plenty of time to "recuperate" "recuper-ate" with a high-flying Forty-Niner Forty-Niner celebration. We're still looking forward to Dan's visit, anyway. Milford's track squad placed two contestants in the state meet held Wednesday at Salt Lake, Weston taking fourth in the mile and White fifth in the 880. The 3 points for Milford tied them with Cedar City, and they finished ahead of two or three other schools. In state competition it takes an awfully large squad and outstanding athletes to compete successfully with the larger schools. |
