Show GOV. LEE AND THE INCOME TAX Several months ago Utah's Governor J. Bracken Lee announced an-nounced that he was going to "bank" his income tax payments instead of paying them to the Director of Internal Revenue, with the express purpose of forcing a court test on the constitutionality con-stitutionality of America's foreign for-eign aid program. Gov. Lee did not refuse to pay the tax he just refused to pay it until such time as tie courts handed down a rulinc on his question. Well, Uncl. Sam now has the money, and ,t Brack gets a ruling rul-ing on his constitutional question ques-tion he'll have to file the suit himself. He wanted the Internal Inter-nal Revenue Department to file it. Instead, they just moved in and took the money away from him. fr- . the courts would rule on it a i darned sight quicker. Frankly, we believe that the "foreign aid" program is popular popu-lar with only a small minority of U. S Citizens. And we don't figure that being opposed to giving our tax dollars to foreign nations justifies the label of "isolationism." We can be good neighbors, friendly to all, and still not play Santa Claus to the world. The only chaos, or crisis, if the courts ruled in favor of Gov. Lee, would be inside nations na-tions across the seas which have geared their economy to a free U S handout basis. They'd have to start figuring how to live on their own income. There would be no chaos or crisis in Amer- ica, because such a ruling would not change our income tax laws. The Revenue Dept. boys would still collect just as much from each American taxpayer, but it would have to stay in the U. S. And with those blilions staying in the U S it would mean a sweetheart of a budget surplus each year (which could be applied ap-plied against our ever-ballooning national debt) or a decrease in taxes, and probablv a little bit of both. We think Brack has a point can Congress, or cannot Congress, Con-gress, constitutionally give taxpayers' tax-payers' money to foreign nations. na-tions. The only thing Brack did was try to get the Federal courts to answer that' question. We'd like to see it answered. At the time of Gov. Lee's first announcement, we published pub-lished results of a Milford High School poll on "Is Brack Morally Mor-ally Right or Morally Wrong?" Most of the answers said he was wrong; "What if everyone would refuse to pay their taxes what would happen to the country?" "It would create a national crisis"; "It would mean chaos"; "If people want to live in America they shouldn't complain com-plain about paying taxes." We think they missed the point entirely. As we pointed out above. Gov. Lee did NOT refuse to pay his taxes. He took the only way he saw to force a ruling on whether, under our Constitution, Constitu-tion, Americans can be taxed for the benefit of foreign nations. And "if everyone refused to pay their taxes" (until the courts ruled on the question) we think |
