Show i FARMERS URGE WEED CONTROL, DRAFT DEFERMENTS Agricultural Planning Committee Com-mittee meetings were held in Beaver, Minersville and Milford during the past week. Numerous Numer-ous recommendations were made for the improvement of agriculture in Beaver County. All three committees recommended recom-mended that a drive be made to eliminate the noxious weed "puncture vine," which has now invaded quite a number of city streets and public grounds in Beaver, Minersville and Milford. It has. also infested some sections sec-tions of state highways. The committee recommended that the cities concerned and the state highway department spray this weed with 2-4-D to control con-trol it before it produces seed next summer, in order to keep it from spreading any more. This weed produces a thorn that is dangerous to livestock and will also puncture tires. The Minersville committee members felt that a serious shortage of farm labor has developed de-veloped due to the drafting of so many farm boys and the situation sit-uation would become acute unless un-less the draft board changed its policy and gives some deferments, defer-ments, at least until some of the boys who are now in the service serv-ice are released. The government govern-ment is asking for increased farm production, the Minersville delegates stated, but farm production pro-duction in their area would decrease de-crease without sufficient farm labor. The Milford committee recommended recom-mended that all alfalfa be sprayed with chloradane this coming spring to control alfalfa weevil. All the committees recommended recom-mended that cattle should be sprayed to control lice at least once a year. They recommended recommend-ed that dipping vats be built at convenient places in the county so that cattle could be dipped. |
