Show HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TOUR FOREST AREA Thirteen students of the Beaver Beav-er County Junior and Senior High Schools were taken on a two-day trip over the Beaver Ranger District by Forester H. M. Christensen, The trip was given as an award. to the winners win-ners of the conservation quiz contest in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Fish-lake Fish-lake National Forest. Award winners participating in the trip were Coreen Harden, Jackie Robb, Ronald Uffens and Paul Jiminez of Milford; Patricia Patri-cia Carter, Louise Thompson, David McKnight, Gordon Eyre, DeLoy Baker and Roland Baker of Minersville, and Mary Jo Howd, Phyllis Paice and Alan Hutchings of Beaver. Also making mak-ing the trip were school teachers Frank Farnsworth and Evin Nielson, and Elvira Christensen. The students were taken thru two of the fpur power stations in Beaver Canyon, where it was explained by Ranger Christensen Christen-sen that the water was used four times to create power for most of Southern Utah before being used for irrigation purposes. pur-poses. Senator O. C. McShane conducted the tour thru the Upper Tellurjde power station and explained the functions of the plant, and also the need for protection for the watershed in order to furnish the greatest amount of usable water for power and irrigation. The students visited the re-seeded re-seeded areas in Merchants Valley, Val-ley, Gunsite Pass and Dry Flat. They also visited the deer studies enclosure at Big Flat, and the sawmill at Dry Flat. Ranger Christensen marked trees for cutting. They were cut with a power saw, skidded to a truck and hauled to the sawmill, where the students witnessed the .sawing of the logs into boards. Highlights of the trip were the hike to the top of Mt. Delano, Del-ano, highest peak in the Tushar Range., and boat riding at Puffer Lake, where boats were furnished fur-nished by Game Warden Othello Riley and Ed Larson. Guests at a picnic dinner on the lawn at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Don Gleason, Sunday, were Mr. and Mrs. Bill Haynie, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Archer, Karen and Jolaine, who gathered gath-ered at the Gleason home to help Don celebrate his birthday. Mrs. Charles Glenn and sons, Doug and Tom. were week-end visitors at the home of Mrs. Susan Glenn, and enjoyed the banquet for the Governor. Mrs. Kate Cooksley of Superior. Super-ior. Ariz., and son and daughter" in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Cooksley. were in town last week attending the funeral of Jittle Kaye Baudino. Mr. and Mrs. Freeman Cate of El Paso. Texas, arrived Wednesday Wed-nesday of last week for a visit with Milford friends. They left on Monday. Mrs. McKee of Huntington Park, Calif., was called to Milford Mil-ford because of the illness of her mother, Mrs. James Lang. She returned to her home Wednesday, Wed-nesday, with Mrs. Lang accompanying accom-panying her to the California city to rest and recuperate. Visitors in Milford last Friday and Saturday were Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Richmond and two' sons, Richard and Todd. They were guests at the homes of Mrs. Richmond's aunt and family, Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Zabriskie and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Baxter. They will return to their home in Sacramento, Calif., after a National Park tour. |
