JR' X DAY SCHOOL WEEK Bt Geonc Pec,-y Pec,-y Now that the Supreme Court, by a vote of 8 to 1, has ued that religion cannot be taught in the public schools 'the United States, there remain but two sources from hich children can get religious instruction their par-its par-its and the Sunday School. Unfortunately this one source in all too manv cases nst he ruled out. In countless homes the parents have y lather the ability nor the inclination to impart to their offspring a knowledge of spiritual things. American children only the Sunday Sun-day School teacher standing between be-tween them and materialistic, godless manhood and woraan-i woraan-i heod. For that reason, the Lay-r Lay-r men's National Committee believes be-lieves that NATIONAL SUNDAY SUN-DAY SCHOOL WEEK, which it sponsors each year, takes on an t extra degree of importance this year. It will be observed April 12 to 18. J. Edgar Hoover, director of . the Federal Bureau of Investiga-t Investiga-t on, most certainly qualifies as aiVex,pert on crime and juvenile delinquency. Here follows part of a tribute he recently paid to the Sunday Schools and their teachers: "The Sunday School is a citadel cita-del of real spiritual influences. Religion to a boy or girl becomes a reality based on love and not I on fear. Youngsters come to I know that God asks more than mere lip service to His com-l com-l mandments; that He asks us to I live under His guidance and . loves "The Sunday School teaches the power of prayer and the need to make God an intrinsic part of our daily lives. The Sunday t School teaches the child to rule yr his spirit and to place a reliance upon God which will not be V shaken in later years. It stands as a strong bulwark against the J angry waves of evil presently I sweeping across our nation. It I is a powerful medium in mater- ially reducing the army of f youthful offenders and delin-f delin-f quents. . I "I would like to pay tribute to C - the thousands of loyal men and women who are serving unselfishly unsel-fishly as teachers in our Sunday-Schools. Sunday-Schools. We, in law enforcement, enforce-ment, look upon them as com-panions-in-arms in the fight against crime. "As true Crusaders for Christ i the Sunday School teachers want the nation's children to be honest, hon-est, truthful, and unselfish. They are convincing youngsters that right habits, attitudes, and appreciations ap-preciations are necessary attributes attri-butes for decent living. They are in the front rfanks of the great army of Americans who are courageously fighting to free our national scene from dishonesty, dishon-esty, selfishness, greed, and moral instability. In recruiting for God, they are building for America. "More often than not, a child is first introduced to the Bible by a Sunday School teacher. It it quite impossible to believe that progress along the road to righteous living may be accomplished accom-plished without the guidance of the Bible. It is the course of spiritual food, the solution of life's problems, and the inspiration inspira-tion for Christian living. "As a law enforcement officer, offi-cer, I am certain that unless children chil-dren are given the opportunity of participating in activities which have God as their fundamental funda-mental objective, we cannot hope to materially reduce crime in our country." That certainly is a hearty en-; dorsement for our Sunday Schools and their teachers by a realist, not a professional reformer. re-former. Surely it should induce every parent to pack the children chil-dren off to Sunday School on Sunday.
