The association stressed that cigarettes are a health hazard for teen-agers; the earlier one begins to smoke, the greater the risk in future years. "Does cigarette smoking cause heart disease?" Answer: It has not been proved to be a direct cause, but studies strongly suggest that it contributes con-tributes to or speeds up the development of coronary artery ar-tery disease which leads to heart attacks. "Why is smoking especially dangerous for patients with diseases of blood vessels in the arms and legs?" Answer: It aggravates their condition by constricting blood vessels that are already narrowed and damaged. The association leaflet points out that "smoking is an added risk for people who are more susceptible to coronary artery disease. |
