T TIL Mi ii CEDAR CITY The Cedar High School Redmen opened the 1982-83 basketball season by feasting on the Hurricane Tigers last week, 59-44. The Tigers, who are the defending 2A state basketball champions, played good basketball, but the Redmen played better. "Hurricane is a good ballclub," Cedar coach John Nielson said. The season opener allowed the Redmen to clear their bench and play everyone. "I was very pleased that we could play everyone," Nielson said. Of all that did play several played very well. Junior forward Robert Pearson proved his value both on the boards and off. The 6'5" eager scored 14 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Pearson was battling against 6'6" Hurricane standout stan-dout Ken Last. "We need to have that out of Robert every game," Nielson commented. Pearson's rebounding led the Red-men Red-men to a 28-19 lead at halftime. Cedar dominated the rebounding and the flow of the game. The Redmen played tough defense against the Tigers, and the Tiger's Last got into foul trouble early in the game. "I don't think that his foul trouble affected af-fected the game any. It helped us but it didn't change the game," Nielson said. Robert Nakken, who started the game quite sluggish came blasting out in the second half. Nakken led all scorers with 20 points. He scored mostly on drives through the lane. "Robert has only been practicing with us a week and did well. He needs to shoot the ball better and can and will as the season goes on," Nielson said. Another of the big guns for Cedar was K.C. Jones. Jones pumped in 16 points in the winning effort for the Redmen. Doug Greenhalgh added 3 points and Mike Garfield and Mark Esplin each scored 2 points. Brett Staple and Roger Hulet scored 1 point apiece. "We only had nine turnovers and shot 47 percent from the field." commented Nielson. The 47 percent shooting is a good way for the Redmen to start off the season, but there are a few skills needing improvement. "We really need to shoot our free throws better, "Nielson said. "We're going to need that output as the season goes on." Nielson was also quite pleased with the flow of the game. "We handled the ball very well," he said. "We'll just need more output from all the players and also some better foul shooting. The Redmen will play next Dec. 3 in Cedar City against South High School. Cedar High forward Mike Garfield lays in a basket in the Redmen's match against the Hurricane Tigers. Cedar won the contest 59-44 to open the season. |
