No libelous, obscene or malicious copy will be accepted. MX not answer Editor: While the need to upgrade national defense is real, MX is not the answer. MX is not necessary for strong military defense, likewise, it will undermine the very security we all seek to preserve. While Utah and Nevada will absorb the brunt of the environmental and economic impact, this system's impact will echo permanently throughout the United States. My secondary concern is for my homeland, but my primary concern is for my backyard, for Utah. . Utah's economy will suffer severe inflation during both the construction as well as the deployment phase. Initially, our population will increase 600 percent, taxing already inadequate housing, educational systems, utility services, law enforcement and health institutions. After two or three construction con-struction years, the population will . decrease as dramatically as it increased. in-creased. Those whose roots remain deep will be left to face an inflated tax base as well as unemployment and inflated food, land and housing costs. MX will precipitate enormous erosion across 160,000 acres of Utah-Nevada land and, eventually we will have no more than a dust bowl; likewise, our land will be criss-crossed with 9,000 miles of road-nearly 1-3 the entire federal highway miles. A desert ecosystem eco-system is fragile and demands centuries cen-turies to recover. Utah's social environment is just as fragile as its land. Utah's rural communities com-munities are not prepared, and never could be fully prepared, to handle the expected population increase in a well-planned well-planned fashion. Individual security, controlled traffic, clean surroundings, friendly atmospheres the simple pleasures we take for granted every day will no longer be ours. MX has not been approved; ap-proved; there is still a chance to stop this insanity. Our opinions and words are important. Individually, we can ask our friends across the country to support, through letters to our senators, our congressmen, our govenors and President Ronald Reagan, this dissention.
