V t BERNIE LEAVITT Leavitt named head basketball coach at Tooele Berne Leavitt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dudley Leavitt of Cedar City, has been named head basketball coach at Tooele High School. Leavitt has been at Tooele High School since 1977 when he was named assistant varsity basketball coach and head junior varsity coach under Mike Johnsen. At the time of his appointment he was serving as assistant basketball and head track coach. Announcement of Leavitt's appointment was made by Principal Paul Skyles. Leavitt will take over the job left vacant by the resignation of Johnson when school resumes this fall. "We are extremely fortunate for-tunate to have a man with the qualifications, enthusiasm en-thusiasm and character of coach Leavitt," Skyles stated. Leavitt in assuming his new responsibilites as the Buff's basketball mentor has a wealth of both playing and coaching experience. While at Cedar High School Leavitt earned all-state honors, was captain of the Redmen and was also honored as Cedar City's "Athlete of the Year." Following his high school career, Leavitt attended Dixie Junior College for two years earning ICAC all- conference honors and was selected as team captain his sophomore year. While at Dixie he participated in the Junior College National Tournament and was declared "Freshman of the Year in Basketball." His carrer continued with Leavitt finishing out his collegiate career as a member of the Thunderbirds at Southern Utah State College in Cedar City. At SUSC he was a regular guard for two years, was team captian his senior year, and gained the distinction of being selected to the Color Country all-Tournament all-Tournament Team. Leavitt completed his schooling and received a bachelor of science degree from SUSC with a major in physical . education and a minor in health education. Currently he is working on his masters 1 degree in physical education at BYU. While at Tooele Leavitt has served as assistant football coach and head coach of both cross country and track. The Cedar City native succeeds Mike Johnsen who guided the Buffs for five years before resigning at the end of the last season. Johnson will remain at Tooele High School as a teacher. |
